Is my dog mourning the bunny? He's upset, won't eat, and clingy.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bean. I am sorry to hear about your recent loss. It sounds like Bean is grieving the loss as well. She should start acting more normal soon, but if her behavior persists she will need to see her veterinarian. If she is not anything, vomiting or displaying other abnormal signs, she should be seen soon. If her appetite is just decreased then you can give her another week or so. Be sure to encourage her to eat and drink as much as possible. You can try hand feeding her or adding warm water to her kibble. Sometimes warmed up canned food is enticing as well. Basically, continue with your daily routine so the rest of his life doesn't change. Dogs can also sense our grief so his sadness may improve when yours does. Again, it all takes time. Hello, and thanks for your question. I'm sorry to hear that your older dog is likely nearing the end of her life, and it's great that you're thinking about Derek and how he may cope. In short, all dogs respond a little differently. Some go through a period of obvious mourning with a decreased appetite and lethargy, while others don't. Dogs are pretty resilient and flexible, and likely Derek will do ok, even if he needs some time to mourn and adjust to the changes without his buddy there. Just give him some extra love and attention, and provide some extra stimulation through bonding activities, such as play and walks. Usually within a week or two they start to adjust to the "new normal." Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. Dogs and cats definitely grieve for other animals. I am so sorry that you lost your other bunny. I can understand that this is hard for you and for Sugar as well. It is normal for one pet to grieve when another has passed away. This can be a very stressful time for your rabbit. The biggest concern is that she’s not eating well. A rabbit that stops eating is at risk for developing gastric stasis which can be very painful and possible life-threatening condition. Continue doing your best to encourage her to eat and drink. Offer her her favorite snacks and treats if that is all she will take for now. Try to interact with her and pay more attention to her than you usually do to help comfort her. If she continues to not want to eat you may want to look into getting a critical care diet for herbivores such as Oxbow Critical Care to help supplement her eating. If she goes for more than 24 hours without eating then you should take her to the vet to help prevent gastric stasis from occurring. Again, I am so sorry for your loss. I hope this helps. It sounds like Hayley is missing your husband. If she is hiding a lot, and also is not eating and drinking much at all, it would be best to have her evaluated by your vet to make sure there's no medical explanation for her change in behavior that needs to be addressed. If her physical exam and any tests (blood tests, etc) that your vet recommends are all normal, then we would say that, yes--this is a behavioral problem. If that is the case, it may help to consult with a behaviorist and trainer; however here's a few things you can try at home. -if she's more bonded to him than you, work on forging that bond with you more. Keep treats that she likes in your pocket. Take her for walks. Give her one on one attention away from the other dogs. This might help. -Do all the dogs get along? I am sure it is very difficult to be going through this. Dogs are emotional and can become distressed / sad when a loved one passes away. Unfortunately, it just takes time.
