Is my dog suffering from mitral valve disease with loud breathing?

Most dogs with a heart murmurs are fine and symptom free, there is no way to know for sure but when she is a little older you can ask your vet to refer you to a cardiology specialist to have a few tests done to check if her heart is in healthy condition.

With Charlie-coughing is no fun!! With the history of mitral valve disease I would definitely be concerned that the coughing is secondary to progressing cardiac issues. I would recommend taking Charlie to your regular veterinarian as soon as you can. They can do a thorough physical exam and may recommend X-rays and blood work. The concern is that Charlie’s heart is no longer pumping as effectively as it should, and fluid can start to build up in the lungs. This makes it difficult to breath and contributes to coughing. Depending on the findings your vet may recommend seeing a cardiac specialist, additional testing such as a cardiac ultrasound (echo) may be indicated as well. Your vet will likely discuss some medication options with you-dogs with cardiac disease often need medication to help remove the fluid in their lungs and also to help support cardiac function.

Heavy breathing during rest may be heart related. I wouldn't suspect a tracheal problem unless she is actively coughing when awake and especially during excessive motion or play. I would have your vet listen to her heart for any obvious murmurs and then go from there. If a murmur is present, then the vet will want to do a cardiac workup for Karma so that we can get a handle on things before they progress. In a dog Miller's age, this cough and heavy breathing could be due to something serious like heart disease. Unfortunately, heart disease is common in old dogs, and while it cannot be cured, its symptoms can be managed with medication. I think it's really important that he sees a vet as soon as possible, so I would recommend taking him into see his vet this weekend. I hope this helps.

Poor Mickey! I would take him back into a vet today, or at the very least give your vet a call. It could be that the current dose of medication he is on is not working as well as it used to, and the heavy breathing is caused by a build up of fluid in his heart. Additional medications can be added on as needed to treat heart disease, and doses of the medication he is currently on may need to be adjusted.
