Updated on September 23, 2025

My boxer got into some porcupine quills and had removed as many as I could one remained in his lower lip as it broke off flush and after about a hundred of them that I removed my dog was frustrated and wouldn't let me at the last one in his lip so being late at night gave him a break but when I looked for it the next morning it was gone and had migrated into his lower lip, about two days later he had a soft mass under his chin now size of a baseball and hard mass hes on cephalexan will this work

Ouch, poor Dude! Cephalexin may help to treat any infection/abscess that has formed around the remaining quill, but the only way to really resolve the issue is to have the quill removed. (As a side note, only give the cephalexin if it has been prescribed or discussed with Dude's vet.) Your best bet is to take Dude to the vet because he will likely need sedation to have the quill removed and have the lesion flushed with saline. I hope that he feels better soon!
