My dog has a lump on his butt. Does he need a vet visit soon?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Rocky! I recommend any mass that is changing: getting bigger, changing color or is bleeding/infected be evaluated by a Vet. The bump looks small and likely can be removed with a local block of lidocaine and a punch biopsy is Rocky would sit still enough. Possible causes are sebaceous adenoma, other cyst, hemaratoma or less likely a mast cell tumor. A lot of benign and cancerous masses can look the same. I wish Rocky the best!

This does seem rather small in size and could very well be an insect bite. Since it isn't really bothering him, I would recommend monitoring this for now to see if this will spontaneously resolve If it is still present after 2 weeks or worsens at any time, then its best to get your vet to take a look at this on physical exam. Oh that is quite a large bump! I'm wondering if it could be a cyst, or if her anal sac is impacted. Because it's that large and I'm concerned it could rupture, I would have Frida seen by a vet immediately. Best of luck.

It may be a mass or tumor. Infection or trauma cannot be ruled out. You would need to have Creed physically examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the lump. A fine needle aspirate can be done to collect samples for pathology. This may provide a diagnosis. Once results are returned, you can discuss treatment options with your veterinarian. If Creed is licking or chewing at the area, place an e-collar (cone) on him until the issue is resolved.

This could be a severely abscessed anal gland/sac or a tumor or a perineal hernia. This can only be diagnosed with a hands-on exam. You should have it examined by your veterinarian, as it is not possible to distinguish these by just looking at a photo. An abscess can usually be treated with antibiotics and/or be lanced, and a hernia may have to be fixed surgically. To identify a tumor, your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning.

However the only way to determine what kind of mass this is is to take Rocky to your veterinarian for an exam. These lumps are not typical of a flea allergy dermatitis. That typically is just a superficial rash with itching, hair loss, scabs, etc. These lumps are concerning. Your pet may have developed abscesses which are deeper infections that form pockets of pus or infectious fluid. This is worth a trip to the vet for a recheck. I do not feel that it is a life threatening emergency, but it should be addressed by your veterinarian as soon as regular business hours resume. Your pet may need prescription antibiotics, the lumps may need to be aspirated or checked with a needle and if they are full of pus, they should be drained.
