My dog has something under skin. Is it a bug or just a lump?

Although a picture would help to define better the nature of it, generally speaking, this kind of lump/growth needs to be ideally assessed by your veterinarian to have a definitive and specific answer. Usually there are two ways your vet can do that a part from examining it directly during physical examination. A biopsy can be taken under local or general anesthetic, otherwise a smaller sample through a fine needle can be aspirated (this technique is called FNA= fine needle aspiration). Differentials include skin cysts, infections, benign or more sinister type of tumors. Hello and thank you very much for your question. Fleas can be so frustrating and I sympathize with what you were going through. What has to happen for your dog to heal and for the lump to possibly go down, Is for the itch cycle and the inflammation to be stopped. A visit to the local veterinarian is a must in this situation because they will have strong prescription strength flea preventative as well as steroids that can be given to your dog to stop the fleas and therefore the dermatitis that’s associated with their biting. I urge you not to use any further over-the-counter flea preventative or skin medications without the approval from your veterinarian. This will only delay the healing and may exacerbate the problem. The lump should go down with time as long as the fleas are killed and the inflammation of the skin is controlled. But, if the lamp does not go away within the next two months, you may want to have your veterinarian take a biopsy of it just to see if it is indeed even related to the fleas. Does that make sense? I appreciate you reaching out to our service. I hope I’ve helped you today.

Hello. I do not think this is a tick, so it could be a scab. It could also be a small skin tumor, so if this does not seem to be healing over the next couple of days, it would be best to let your veterinarian take a look. It is sometimes very difficult to diagnose something from just a picture, but a quick visit with your veterinarian can confirm exactly what this is. Best to you & Loki & thanks for contacting JustAnswer.

I can't really tell from the picture what it is. If you dog isn't on a flea or tick preventative, that could be part of the issue. Skin infection, sebaceous cyst, or other masses would be possible, as well. I would wait and see what happens. You can get her started on a flea preventative, and use a medicated shampoo like Dechra MalAcetic Ultra Shampoo for mild skin infections.

It is difficult to know for sure without seeing it. I don't see a picture included so if you tried to upload a picture then it didn't work properly. With a tick, you can usually see some legs so if you don't see any legs then it could be a skin tag, especially since he seemed to be in pain when you tried to remove it. The best thing would be to have your vet take a look at it to determine the exact cause and treat. Continue to use a flea/tick prevention, like Frontline, NexGard, Bravecto, etc.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! These could be benign or malignant growths. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point. I recommend you have your pup evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a good day!
