Why does my dog have spikes on his lower lip and drool from one side?

Although the area in your picture does look red and potentially inflamed I don't think it looks infected. It would be best for your vet to make that call in person - I'd recommend making an appointment to have them examine the area in person and until then you should prevent Rocco from licking the area. I doubt the drooling is related. Drooling can be related to a tooth problem (possibly something you can't see), nausea, pain or ingesting something that tastes bad. If the drooling continues you should bring this up to your vet as well.

Poor pup! I'm sorry to hear that she's having this problem. There are a number of different things that could cause problems with closing the mouth and excessive drooling like this, so it's hard to say what might be wrong without being able to examine her. Some common possibilities would include an injury to the mouth or jaw, a tumor or infection in the mouth, or a neurologic problem such as a stroke. I would recommend taking your dog to the vet for an exam today, if possible, since some of these problems can be quite serious. Your vet can do a complete neurologic exam and may also sedate her so that a thorough oral exam can be performed as well. Once a diagnosis is made, he/she can talk to you about what treatment will be needed.

Hi, and thanks for your question. This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics or antifungal meds (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can be possibly started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any scratching (if any). There is most likely a wound in the mouth which is why he is drooling. I highly recommend having him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. It was the right thing to do to look into Jasper's mouth! You are right the excessive drooling could be due to dental problems, but it could also be due to nausea, stress, or anxiety. Since he is eating fine, drinking normally, and behaving normally, then I would not take him into a vet just yet. If the drooling continues through today, then I would take him into the vet tomorrow for an exam. It could be that he may have a dental problem, but it's far back in his mouth and may require sedation for a thorough look.

You should have Pete examined by your veterinarian. There may be periodontal disease, infection or foreign body causing the symptoms. Sedation may be required to examine him fully. If it is periodontal disease, a complete dental cleaning may be indicated. This will require anesthesia and Pete may need extractions.

I think I understand what you are trying to describe when you say a dropping jawline. If you are indicating that part of Austin's face is drooping while the other side is normal, than this is normally due to some sort of neurologic condition resulting in paralysis of the facial nerve. It can cause excessive drooling, dropping of food, general asymmetry of the facial musculature, and sometimes issues closing the eye on the affected side of the face. The cause of this condition is often a mystery, though some of the causes that are recognized include significant ear infections, trauma, polys in the nose / mouth, and certain types of cancer. Treatment of this condition is completely based on the underlying cause (if it can be identified) and management of the resulting symptoms. Hope this makes sense.
