Why is my dog losing hair so fast? What's the reason and solution?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bubba! How old is Bubba? A lot of skin conditions can look the same. But from your photos I think either a skin infection from yeast or bacteria, ring worm or demodex (non-contagious mite). If he is older I recommend having blood work done, some systemic illnesses can manifest in the skin. If he has a skin infection then medicated shampoo and antibiotics or antifungals are needed. If demedex is suspected, especially if he is young, than your Vet will perform a skin scrape to look for the mite under the microscope. Thankfully demodex is very easy to treat these days with the new oral flea and tick medications (Nexgard and Bravecto). Ring worm is diagnosed with a cultured and is treated with either lyme sulfur dips or oral antifungals. I think it is best to make an appointment with your Vet when they open on Monday and start medications based on your Vet's diagnosis. I hope this helps and I wish you and Bubba the best!

I would have this checked by a vet. It sounds very much like ringworm. Although the name suggests otherwise, ringworm is not caused by a worm at all-but a fungus. This highly contagious infection can lead to patchy areas of hair loss on a pet, and can spread to other animals-and to humans, too. Classic symptoms of ringworm include lesions that typically appear on a pet’s head, ears, paws and forelimbs. These lesions can cause patchy, crusted circular “bald spots” that sometimes look red in the center. In mild cases of ringworm, there may be just a few broken hairs, while bad cases of ringworm can spread over most of a pet’s body. It’s also possible for a pet to carry the fungus and not show any symptoms whatsoever. Treatment of ringworm depends on the severity of the infection. A veterinarian may prescribe a medicated shampoo or ointment that contains miconazole or a dip such as lime sulfur to kill the fungus. In some cases, oral medications are necessary to cure ringworm. In severe cases, it may be necessary to use a topical and oral treatment, in addition to clipping away the fur. Once treatment begins, lesions should begin to heal in about one to three weeks. Please note, it is important to treat your pet for as long as recommended by your veterinarian. Even though the skin lesions may have cleared up, this doesn’t mean your pet is cured or can’t infect another animal or person. Certain diagnostic tests may need to be repeated in order to ensure cure. And unfortunately, there is no guarantee that reinfection won’t occur!

Poor guy. It looks like Bujee may have either a bacterial infection, demodexx mite issue or a fungal infection. Neither of these can be treated at home without prescription medication from your vet. Also you will have to get him tested first through your vet before knowing how best to move forward with his treatment. I would recommend scheduling an appt with your vet soon to have his skin examined and tested and then the proper treatment can be discussed with your vet. I hope that Bujee's skin improves soon! There are a few things that can cause hair loss that looks like this and these include flea allergy, skin mites, ringworm, bacterial infection and allergies. The fastest cure will be to go to the veterinarian and have Rango checked for fleas and mites. If these are discovered the doctor will recommend a medication to give him to kill the parasites. Otherwise you can try treating his lesions at home but it may not be successful pending the cause. First you need to wash the areas every day with an antibacterial soap. Make sure to rinse it well. Then you will need to make sure he is not licking or chewing at the areas. An Elizabethan collar worn at all times will help to stop that behavior. Lastly you can take a dab of coconut oil and rub it into the hairless areas once to twice daily. You must make sure that he does not lick this off as it could cause stomach upset. If the areas are not getting significantly better within a couple weeks, or if they’re getting worse, then I recommend to see his veterinarian. You can also rule out fleas by putting him on a good product. Your local veterinarian may have some recommendations. I like a product called Simparica. This is suspicious of ringworm (a fungal infection of the skin). This could also be due to a yeast or bacteria infection. It's best to get it diagnosed by a veterinarian, because ringworm can spread to different parts of the body and can spread to people. Itchy skin and hair loss is often due to the following things: 1) Allergies - this can happen suddenly and is usually due to an environmental (i.e pollen) cause. 2) External parasites - fleas, lice and mites can all cause intense itching. It's good to check him for fleas and get treatment if needed. The permethrin shampoo is only temporary, so it's possible that he is getting re- infested. He may have mites, which are microscopic and require a vet to find. 3) Over-bathing, or using the wrong product for bathing - Bathing too often can cause the skin to get dry and irritated. Dogs should normally be bathed no more than once a month with a shampoo that is labeled for dogs. If you bathe more than that, or use a shampoo or soap that is meant for people, then you could be damaging the normal protective barrier of the skin. One thing you can do for itchy skin, is give a bath with cool water using an oatmeal or aloe shampoo. You can get these shampoos at the pet store. I hope this helps you to identify the problem. Buddy may have a mite infection (demodicosis) or a bacterial/fungal skin infection. I suggest you make an appointment with your veterinarian for a skin exam, possibly some diagnostics (skin swab, culture or biopsy) and relevant treatment.
