Why is my dog licking his private area, with dry skin and hair loss?

Hello. Alvin looks like he is chronically licking his skin. Since this is an isolated area, you need to investigate what the underlying cause might be. This might include some pain from arthritis or inflammation in the muscle, to basically an obsessive compulsive type behavior. The first thing is to put an Elizabethan collar on him so he can not continue to lick here. Then see your vet so any underlying causes can be addressed. Hopefully, this will clear up quickly. Hello. This looks like the typical skin changes seen with many of the allergies pets can suffer from. Unless the underlying allergies are dealt with, it is difficult to totally clear up the skin. You can start with a mild shampoo, either containing Pramoxine or 1% hydrocortisone ( available online & at pet retailers ). Use cool water & bath her twice a week. Adding a good quality fish oil supplement may help ( approx. 1000 mg twice a day ). Since your pet is an older girl, it would be very helpful to do some bloodwork to identify any underlying issues, including a low thyroid, that may be contributing to her skin problems. Pets can lick a specific area due to a few reasons. Sometimes an area on a lower leg can be related to anxiety, skin mites, pain in the leg, nerve tingling, or a an abrasion which she is now licking. For cases like this, I recommend to have Diamond visit her veterinarian to looks for any evidence of pain or mites. If the doctor is more suspicious of an anxiety or nerve tingling, there are medications that may help. You do need to try to stop her from licking the leg. An Elizabethan collar worn any time she is not being directly supervised can help. It may not change the situation but an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs can decrease inflammation and improve skin health. The first thing you need to do is put a cone collar on him to keep him from continuing to lick the skin. He has scrotal dermatitis (an infection of the scrotal skin) and no matter what you use to treat It with, if he just continues to lick, it will not get better. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics).
