Why is my dog constantly licking herself wet after a spa trip?

Poor pup! It sounds like he may have some irritation in this area. This can sometimes happen due to skin irritation from the clippers (if his rear end was shaved), a local allergic reaction to the shampoo or other grooming products, or possibly even an anal gland problem since this often causes dogs to act this way. I would recommend getting a topical hydrocortisone spray or ointment labeled for dogs (you can get this at Walmart or most pet stores) and apply to the area to help soothe it. You can also get him a plastic e-collar if needed to keep him from continuing to lick the area and make it more irritated. If he's still acting uncomfortable after 24 hours, I would recommend having him seen by a vet to determine the problem and get him prescription medication to relieve the discomfort.

Lilly Lynne may have a bit of rash or razor burn if she was trimmed close. First be sure she is on appropriate flea control as she may have picked up fleas from groomer. Benedryl is acceptable to use once or twice daily if it give her relief. She may also be having a reaction to the shampoo or fragrance the groom used. I would give her a bath in dawn to wash off any residue to see if that helps. (Original blue dish soap dawn). If no improvement then she may need a vet visit. I hope she’s back to normal quickly. Yes, dogs love the taste of coconut oil, and will often lick any topical medications off - either because they enjoy the taste or because they are still itchy underneath the topical medication. I would recommend a soothing shampoo to calm down the razor burn or itch, I like Dechra DermaLyte Shampoo. You can also add fish oils to her food to help with itching. You may ask your groomer what kind of shampoo or products they put on Keira, because she may be allergic to it. If she is still itchy in a few days, she may need to see a vet, sometimes razor burn can cause a mild skin infection and she would benefit from prescription antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.

Hello. This looks like the typical skin changes seen with many of the allergies pets can suffer from. Unless the underlying allergies are dealt with, it is difficult to totally clear up the skin. You can start with a mild shampoo, either containing Pramoxine or 1% hydrocortisone ( available online & at pet retailers ). Use cool water & bath her twice a week. Adding a good quality fish oil supplement may help ( approx. 1000 mg twice a day ). Since your pet is an older girl, it would be very helpful to do some bloodwork to identify any underlying issues, including a low thyroid, that may be contributing to her skin problems. Hi, and thanks for your question. This could be due to an allergy, although it could also be infection or mites. First of all, in order to rule out skin parasites, you will need to treat with a high quality flea treatment, then ask the vet to perform a skin scrape - this might reveal an infection or a mite infestation. If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Many times this will lead to skin wounds or hair loss. If this is not the case, she could be nauseous. This can be demonstrated by increased licking, especially the carpet. Scratching the ears suggests ear canal infection, that is often a part of allergic skin problems. A visit to the groomers could definitely make things worse as Louls may be allergic to one of the products your groomer used on him. You should take Louls to your local vets to confirm the diagnosis and to get treatment for him. It will likely be a course of anti-inflamatory medications.
