My dog is lethargic and has hind leg weakness after sulfur shampoo.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Scout! I haven't heard of limping as a side effect of flea shampoo. Usually the side effects are GI (vomiting, diarrhea, not eating), lethargy, skin irritation or neurologic (seizures, twitching). I think maybe he hurt himself before, during or after the bath and that is the the cause of the limping. The discomfort and lethargy could be from the bath or the painful leg. If he is still uncomfortable, lethargic, limping, not eating through out the day then I would bathe him in Dawn to remove the flea product and take him to the Vet. I recommend the edible flea and tick products (Nexgard, Bravecto or Simparica) to prevent and get rid of flea infestations. I wish Scout the best!

These signs could be compatible with a severe gastrointestinal infection/inflammation or possibly to an intoxication. The presence of lethargy and weakness is quite concerning and should be ideally and immediately checked by your local veterinarian as soon as possible. Antibiotics and symptomatic treatment for vomiting and nausea may be needed. activated charcoal may be important to avoid excess of toxin absorption. Oh my. Poor guy. His symptoms unfortunately aren’t specific for one disease process to speak ok. Lethargy, shivering and weakness can be caused by just about any disease process including: toxin ingestion, underlying heart disease, or even anaphylactic shock is a possibility. But one thing is sure, Snoopy is in need of medical care if this has been going on for more than 6 hrs or so. He will need some diagnostic testing (bloodwork analysis to start) to determine what the underlying problem is so that we know how best to help Snoopy get better. I would recommend getting him seen as soon as you can. I hope that he is able to make a full and speedy recovery. Best of luck to you and take care.

Shampoo and conditioner will definitely make a dog throw up. This should not be a week-long episode though. They usually throw-up a great deal in the beginning, but are fine after 2-3 days. Usually there are no other ingredients in these products that would cause any other toxicity beyond vomiting, but I would have to see the ingredients list to be sure of that. One possibility is that Frankie got dehydrated during his bouts of vomiting. Dogs can quickly get dehydrated with profuse vomiting and it's not easy for them to recover the lost water. Dehydration actually makes them feel bad and nauseous, which can perpetuate the vomiting and dehydration. If this has been going on for a week, then it's best for Frankie to see a vet. The vet can help determine how severe his condition is and at-least give the necessary treatment for dehydration and vomiting. I recommend you take Frankie to the vet within the next 24 hours. It's best to take the bottles of shampoo/conditioner with you to the vet. For now, you can add rehydration salts or pedialyte to his water. This will help to recover lost water and may make him feel better. I hope that helps and Frankie gets better soon.

I would recommend having your vet evaluate Shaffy to see what is causing the weakness. It could be due to arthritis or other orthopedic disease, neurologic disease, muscle weakness, or it could be related to the prescribed medication.

Shasta is experiencing two very different issues that may not have anything to do with one another unfortunately. In terms of hind end lameness, the most common causes of this are traumatic injuries, inflammatory conditions (arthritis / tendinitis), infectious diseases, tick borne diseases, nutritional deficiencies, clotting disorders, and certain cancers. As for diarrhea, the common causes of this include dietary indiscretion, inflammatory conditions of the GI tract, pancreatitis, parasites, infectious diseases, immune-mediated conditions, and certain types of cancers. To address either of these issues if they have been occurring for a significant period of time, both blood work and imaging modalities would be needed. This doesn't sound like an emergency or anything, but if either of these problems has been persistent I would consider making an appointment to have Shasta seen sometime soon for a work-up. There are a variety of medical causes for the symptoms Lil Girl had last night- toxicity, spinal or disk issue, autoimmune disorders, brain tumor, infectious causes and others could all be causes. Scooting or rubbing her rear end on the floor could be due to full anal sacs that need to be expressed or potentially a parasitic infection could be possibilities. I would recommend Lil Girl have a full exam and work up done with her veterinarian. Your veterinarian may take x-rays and run blood work and a fecal test or other diagnostics as needed to determine a cause.
