My Great Dane is lethargic after 3 weeks on SMZ TMP. Is this a side effect?

Hello, I'd recommend taking Monster in for a recheck with his vet. SMZ can be used both once or twice daily; the treatment timing is based on the condition and dosing used. Antibiotic courses that are not finished lead to bacterial resistance and worsening of the initial infection, so it may be that this is happening due to him not finishing his medications. The only instance where that medication could result in such side effects is if for example it is causing like gastrointestinal ulceration and anemia. In that case you may notice black tarry stools and his gums may look pale. If that is the case, I recommend that you have him evaluated as soon as possible as that may represent a medical emergency. Otherwise, severe lethargy can be observed with a variety of conditions going from anemia to pain/discomfort. I recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian soon as that degree of lethargy is not expected from that medication and is likely something else going on. Good luck!

She should be showing signs of improvement by this time if the drugs being used the correct medications for the condition being treated. But obviously something is wrong. First, you may have been giving an antibiotic that was resistant against the infectious agent or whatever is causing the disease. Second, if it is indeed a virus causing the symptoms, then an antibiotic will not be effective. Lastly, maybe the dosage needs to be increased in milligrams as well as frequency. I strongly urge you to contact your veterinarian the soonest possible to have another physical examination performed. Those can be side effects if the medications. Anti seizure medicines such as phenobarbital and bromide can cause profound lethargy and and weakness. Tranadol and the others can make them a little unsteady. Most of the time this affect will wear off after a week or so as they get use to the medicine. If it is interfering with his day to day activities then you might want to talk to your vet about a reduced dose or changing medicines. If it is at all possible, maybe splitting some up at different times might also help
