Why is my dog lethargic and tired with a recurring weeping abscess?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Lack of energy can be the sign of many things that go from just being tired to actually representing a problem like due to pain for example. If he is otherwise fine, I recommend you keep a close eye on him for now. If there is no improvement within the next 2-3 days, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Sofie, I am sorry she isn't feeling well! Sadly the symptoms you are describing are non-specific and can indicate many things. Lethargy, not moving and keeping the eyes closed indicates that Sofie is sick. She could be painful or have a fever. Almost anything can cause the symptoms she is exhibiting ranging from Lyme disease, to cancer, to kidney failure, to nausea, etc. I recommend that Sofie be examined by a Vet today. I hope this helps and I wish Sofie a speedy recovery!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This lump you describe could potentially be something like an abscess for example. However, other things are possible. If there is really an abscess, this should not be treated at home. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If an abscess was noted, further local therapy with drainage and antibiotics would be recommended. Good luck and best wishes!

Abscesses can be very painful and usually it takes a few days of treatment to start to feel better. Recovery is normally complete. However as with any infection there is always a chance of developing sepsis, I would monitor him closely and attend the vet if he does not make any further improvements. Also he may still be fairly uncomfortable so it would be worth discussing further pain relief with your vet.

Hi Seth! Molly is a lovely looking girl. This pustule could be from an insect bite, it could be a cyst, or she could have injured herself causing it. It is concerning that she is acting lethargic lately, and I would have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning for it as long as she is still eating and drinking, and going to the bathroom normally. The vet can diagnose what is causing this pustule and lethargy, and can treat her for it. If she isn't eating or drinking, is extremely lethargic, or develops other signs such as vomiting and diarrhea, I would take her into a vet immediately. I hope this helps!

I'm sorry Sally is not feeling well! The large blister definitely looks like it can be caused by an inset bite and is painful, but it is also concerning that she is lethargic. I recommend having her looked at by a vet as soon as possible, in case there is systemic toxicity from the bite.

It all sounds normal. Cat bite abscesses can really take a toll on their bodies. Draining is good - it means that the infective material is getting out of the body rather than staying trapped under the skin. You can keep it clean by gently wiping with a warm wet washcloth before applying the topical medication. Decreased appetite and lethargy are also normal, but if they last longer than 24-48 hours, I would call your vet to see if she needs to go in for a recheck. Otherwise, just let her rest and heal.
