My chihuahua jumped after surgery. What should I watch for?

The incision appears closed in the pictures and the blood around the incision appears dried, so that is all good news. However, the incision is much redder and more swollen than I would expect it to be the day after surgery, so I would be concerned that she has been licking at the incision. If you don't have one, I would recommend getting an e-collar to prevent her from licking at the incision and keep her in a kennel to make sure that she cannot run and jump and risk opening the incision. If the incision starts to ooze or continues to be red and swollen, you may need to have your veterinarian examine it to make sure that it isn't infected. Good luck! It is probably a good idea to have the incision checked since tying with a female is certainly more activity than he is supposed to have the first week after surgery. He also needs to stay well away from all unspayed females for 6-8 weeks while the testosterone continues to leave his system.

That looks fine for soon after surgery. If he licks at his incision, you should get him a cone to keep him from paying too much attention to it and delaying healing or opening it back up. The bruising is not unusual and should fade over the next few days. Keep him from running, jumping, crate him or confine him in a small room if need be. He should go out on a leash only just to potty and then back inside. He can be out with you if you're home and able to keep an eye on him. After a week to ten days of restricted activity he should be ready to resume his normal routine.

The patient becomes weak, pale and very lethargic. If he has any of these signs, then you need to seek emergency care right away. I recommend taking him to your veterinarian for a quick peek. They will gently clean the incision site to ensure that it is healing normally and the tissue is healthy underneath the scab.
