Dog has itchy skin, black ear spot. Benadryl or vet visit needed?

If the q-tip comes out black, then there is an excess of ear wax and likely an infection. The infection can be caused by bacteria, yeast, or even mites. Ear infections in dogs are very itchy, and often require prescription medications to help clear them quickly and manage the itch. The first step in treating an ear infection is breaking down the large chunks of wax and getting them out of the way so that medications can get to the surface of the ear. I like ear cleaners like Dechra Malacetic Ultra Otic that are antibacterial and antifungal. If you clean Remington's ears twice a day for a couple of days and he is still itching, he will need to go to the vet for prescription medications.

Hi there, It does look like your dog is having an allergic reaction to something. Typically dogs are allergic to their environment or to a food. With the redness of the eyes and ears, it would be best to go to your vet so they can test for secondary infection and prescribe medications to clear things up. You can try rinsing the ears with a 50:50 solution of white vinegar and water and wipe them out with cotton balls, but a vet visit would be ideal. The next thing to do is go to the veterinarian. If the antihistamines are not working, he may need something stronger. These lesions could also now be infected. Make sure to protect the area from rubbing or scratching and he should wear an elizabethan collar at all times. Have him examined soon.

Benadryl is not going to work until you get the infection under control. I recommend bringing Buddy to a veterinarian to have them check his ears and skin. They can treat with antibiotics and topical medication for his ears. Then your veterinarian can discuss reasons for the infection to have started. It can be allergies or even water getting inside of his ears. If Buddy has a history of itching and allergies is a concern there are great new options to help Buddy. It looks like your dog could have a bacterial and/or a yeast infection. Have him examined by a vet for treatment. Your vet can prescribe medications to help. Your vet could also test his thyroid level to make sure he doesn't have a thyroid issue. You could also bathe him with a medicated dog shampoo and see if that helps.

Poor Bowser! The only concern I have is that he may have something stuck deeper into the canal. You can try some Benadryl twice a day to see if this helps his itching. See link below.
