My dog won't stop itching a spot. Is it ringworm or an infection?

You will need to take your dog to a veterinarian for a skin exam. Your dog could be suffering from an allergy, mites, fleas, a bacterial or fungal infection. each of these requires a different treatment, so it is important to find out what is causing the itch. This does, however look like a bacterial infection, Your vet will do a thorough exam and maybe a a skin scrape. He will then discuss the options with you and then prescribe medications such as antibiotics and possibly an antibiotic/antifungal shampoo.

It does sound as if Moose has a hot spot, also known as moist dermatitis. The yellow spots you are describing sound like they could indicate areas of infection. If the area isn't looking significantly improved since you began treatment at home he may need oral antibiotics to help clear up the infection. The vet may also be able to determine if the topical treatments you are using are causing additional irritation to the skin and may be able to recommend something more gentle for Moose's skin.

I recommend that you have Tika evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and treat accordingly. Those spots on Prince could be several things including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing his diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesions with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash his whole body, just those spots). Protect the areas from licking or scratching. If they don't start looking better within about a week or if they get worse, have him examined by his veterinarian who may prescribe medications. If this is ringworm, yes, your other dog could already be infected. Lesions may not show up for up to 4 weeks so keep a close eye on the pup. That looks more like a really inflamed “hot spot” to me. Put an ecollar on him so he can’t lick at it, and take him to your vet. He may need oral antibiotics and a prescription topical treatment. Oh no, poor Jax! It looks like he might have ringworm, which is a highly contagious fungal infection. Unfortunately it's contagious to humans, and if you are itching too, he may have passed it onto you. I would have him seen by a vet tomorrow. If he does have ringworm, the vet can prescribe medication to treat it. You should also go see your doctor if he has it so you can get treatment for it as well. Should he have ringworm, you will need to disinfect the environment because the spores can live in the home for up to 18 months.
