Why is my dog itching, scratching ears, and licking his paws?

Updated on September 23, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 9 months and 28 days old | 66 lbs

I have a 10 month old Lab dog who ive noticed has these black spots near his genitals. Ignored them as i thought it may be just a beauty spot or a scab. But noticed afew more under his fur. He also has been scratching his ear and shaking his head which makes me wonder if he has an ear infection? Licking paws and the scratching left ear

The black spots in the pictures are normal in dogs. They are usually regressed nipples. However if shadow is itchy it is most likely secondary to allergies or parasites. I would recommend applying flea prevention every 30 days. Also you can try an over the counter anti histamine with medicated shampoo. If this is not helping or he gets worse I would recommend taking him to a vet for a good exam. thanks for using pet coach

Poor Roco. It sounds like he most likely has allergies. It may be to the protein in the food, or environmental allergens, or a combination. It sounds like you are on the right track to try to change the protein, but it may be that he needs a prescription diet from your veterinarian. It may also be that he has a yeast infection on top of allergies. The black spots most likely are areas of hyperpigmentation from the allergies. I would recommend you speak w your veterinarian about allergies, an allergy diet, and doing some skin testing. Good luck
