My dog is itching his anus. What can I do for immediate relief?

A warm, moist towel pressed to the area for a few minutes can sometimes help to draw the glands and relieve the discomfort temporarily until you can have her seen and fully assessed. If she is very uncomfortable however hold off as some cases are extremely painful

Poor Rexxy. You can give him an oatmeal bath to see if that helps. Take a cup of oatmeal, and put it into a blender to make a fine powder. Then add it to a warm bath. Have him seen by a vet as soon as you can.

You can try cool baths with an oatmeal shampoo every other day. But there isn't anything that will help with the itch until the parasite is controlled. Cortisone creams will actually make things worse. You can use an e-collar and socks on Simba's feet to prevent damaging the skin (but an e-collar must be used if you use socks to prevent him from eating them!(

From your description and pictures, I would be most suspicious that Amais has mange - a condition caused by a microscopic mite that burrows under the skin. This often starts on the legs, tips of ears and other parts of the body where there is less hair. Eventually, this mite can spread to the whole body and cause the dog to lose all of its hair and be miserable with itchiness. Intense itching could also be due to an allergy, It's also likely that there is already some form of infection starting too; which often happens with very inflamed skin. Either way, Amais needs professional help fast, or the condition will get worse and will take much longer to recover from. Both conditions can be treated with medication prescribed by your veterinarian. The medication is fast acting and will have Amais feeling better quickly. Also, they will be able to determine the cause of the itch and check if anything else is wrong with Amais. I would book him in for an appointment within the next day or so with a veterinarian. In the meantime, you can provide a little relief by giving a bath/shower with cool water. You can also gently apply aloe to the red areas. I hope that helps and Amais gets better soon.

Hello. Itching, especially in the back end, is generally due to allergies, especially to flea bites, but there could also be some inflammation in the rectum itself. This can result from inflamed/infected anal glands or even the presence of intestinal parasites. It would be best to have Buster evaluated by your veterinarian so that a proper diagnosis can be made & this will allow for the correct treatment/medication to start. It’s possible his anal glands are full/uncomfortable. If they are bulging on either side of his anus when you palapate from the outside, then that definitely could be the case. I recommend bringing him to your vet for a rectal exam/anal gland expression and to check his ears. He likely will need and ear cleaner and a steroid/antibiotic/antifungal/antiyeast ointment such as otomax/kometamax/posatex if he has an ear infection. A few days of an allergy medication called Apoquel may help as well. Good luck!

There are several things that could cause the symptoms you are describing including parasites, skin infections or irritation, dry skin, allergies to food or environment, or even something that is causing pain if he growls or winces at being touched. I would recommend bringing Chico into your vet for an exam, especially if the problem persists, worsens, or you can't find an obvious cause for it. In the meantime, a soothing shampoo with aloe or oatmeal can help with dry skin and irritation, and placing a T-shirt or Elizabethan (cone) collar on Chico can prevent him from licking or scratching at it which may worsen irritation. If you see any visible wounds or discharge, keeping the area clean and dry until a vet can examine it may also help.
