Ingrown hairs usually occur when the hair is lost from the follicle and then doesn't grow back properly. Keeping the coat well-groomed can help prevent them, as well as a balanced diet or supplementation with coat boosts such as Vitamin E and fish oil. You can try to break the ingrown hair out of the follicle, and allow the area to rest if it is painful or bothersome to your dobie. If there are a lot of ingrown hairs, the hair follicle appears infected, or they don't seem to be healing, then having your vet take a look is best to make sure there isn't another underlying problem.
