My dog humps his toy. Why are his private parts red and look cut?

What you may be seeing is the *bulbus glandis*. It is a normal part of the [male dog anatomy](https://www.petcoach.co/article/anatomy-and-function-of-the-reproductive-system-in-dogs). The *bulbus glandis* 'ties' a male and female dog together during mating. It doesn't mean his testicles have grown back, only that he is excited. It may also occur with an erection when a dog is overstimulated or happy. The swelling will go down as the dog calms.

What you may be seeing is his bulbus glandis. They are two glands located at the base of the penis on both sides. They function during mating to effect the tie while mounting a female. This is normal and likely no cause for concern. The pigmentation of his scrotum may also be normal. You can have him seen by your veterinarian to discuss any concerns regarding either.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gino! Is Gino eating and drinking? Is he urinating? Is there anyway you can re-post with pictures? Gino could have a testicular torsion, urethral prolapse (especially if you are seeing blood at his penis), a urinary tract infection or simply a skin infection on his belly or testicles or even fleas. I recommend extruding his penis and looking at the tip, checking his skin for fleas and pustules or red bumps. And if he is having trouble urinating and/or isn't eating he needs to see a Vet. Bright red is never good. Check for heat, pain as well. If the testicles are hot and painful as well as red then there is a likely chance that he has an infection or inflamed skin. You should schedule a vet appointment for Charlie Mac. He may need antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication.

Your dog's testicles should have descended when he was a much younger dog. The fact that you're just noticing this now makes me very worried that something is wrong. He could have a torsion, mass, or infection. I would have him seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. He may need to be neutered to resolve this issue.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. An in tact dog may lick his scrotum for many reasons. The most common is actually “contact dermatitis”. That is, a rash from the friction of humping too much. Allergies, pain, and other causes are possible. I’d simply put him in an e-collar (pet store or online) so that he cannot lick them obsessively and cause further irritation. If it’s not better in 48 hours (or worsening at any time), it’s time to see the vet. I absolutely do NOT recommend any over the counter pain medications, though applying some frozen peas (wrapped in a thin kitchen towel or paper towel) might feel great and be very helpful to Fido.
