Male dog humping, sore testicles, vet unavailable. What can I do?

Without at least seeing a photo it is difficult to give advice. This could be a serious issue or it may be just some scrotal dematitis. This is usually very easy to treat so I'm not sure why you say the vet can't help you with a solution. Honestly, the only permanent solution is to have him neutered. This issue doesn't happen in neutered dogs. This could be a recurring issue because him scrotum is staying too wet. Do you keep him in a kennel? Is he laying in his urine a lot? You can try this over the counter antiseptic spray to see if that helps. You need to spray the scrotum 3-4 times per day in the beginning and once it starts to look better you can decrease to twice a day and then once a day. You may have to continue using it every couple days as a prevention or until you can figure out why he keeps getting this. ( ) Also, no matter what you use to treat the scrotum, it will not get better if you allow him to lick it. So, if he is licking it a lot you will need to buy him a cone collar until the scrotum is healed. This could be caused by a local inflammation and possibly an infection. Persistent licking and rubbing can worsen the inflammation. A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly anti-inflammatory ointment are needed to solve the problem. At home, some zinc oxide ointment/cream (like sudocream) can be apply twice daily. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any). I see that your dog is unneutered - one condition that can come on suddenly and be extremely painful is called testicular torsion. Basically, one of the testicles becomes twisted inside the scrotal sac, cutting off the blood supply and causing swelling and intense pain. Based on your description, I would be concerned about this possibility and would recommend getting your dog to a vet as soon as possible, since he is in a lot of distress and there is really nothing that can be done at home to help. Other possibilities would include a scrotal or testicular infection, a tumor, or even a scrotal hernia.

You will need to put an e-collar on your dog so he cannot lick his testicles and keep them from healing. You may have to take him back to the vet for a skin swab or biopsy to be sent in and cultured and examined under the microscope, respectively. This may also be a fungal or parasitic infection or even cancerous.

Poor guy. He must have very sensitive skin and is having a hypersensitivity reaction in that area. I would recommend doing a gentle cleanse of his testicles with a mild soap (i.e Dove or oatmeal based shampoo) and warm water, letting it air dry, and then applying a topical soothing spray (i.e. Hydrocortisone spray) from your local pet store. You can also apply a thin layer of Neosporin if he tolerates it to help prevent secondary infections. Place an e-collar (cone) over him to prevent him from licking it further and see if this resolves in a few days. If not, then he may need additional treatment (i..e steroid shot +/- medicated ointments) from your local vet.

This may be a skin infection of the scrotum, or an infection of the testicles. This is not uncommon to see in unneutered males, but can be somewhat difficult to treat. Unfortunately, without examining Ace it's not possible to diagnose the specific problem and recommend treatment. It's best if you can take Ace to a vet within the next day or two, so they can have a good look and recommend the best treatment. For now, I recommend cleaning the scrotum with a medicated wipe or shampoo (can get this at the pet store) twice a day in case the scrotum is infected. Avoid rubbing or squeezing the area, because this can cause more damage than good. I hope that helps and Ace gets better soon.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I’m sorry to hear Cutler isn’t feeling well. Without seeing him it’s very hard to say what’s going on and how to treat him. I do recommend he is seen by a vet to determine what’s going on. Being an older, intact male, I would be worried about something going on in his testicles or prostate. In the meantime, you could try applying a cold compress to his scrotum for 10-15 minutes a few times today to see if that helps with the swelling. After 24 hours, I would switch to a warm compress (not hot). If that doesn’t improve, I would recommend an exam. Good luck and kisses to Cutler!
