My dog just started raw diet. Why is he humping and can't lie down?

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Roxi may have a food sensitivity issue. Raw diets are nor encouraged by most veterinarians because of the risk of bacterial contamination, & it is very difficult to provide a completely balanced diet this way. I have some clients whose pets have done horrible on raw diets. I would suggest switching Roxi to a limited, but complete diet. One of the best ones out there is Science Diets Salmon formula. This requires a script from your veterinarian, but it is well worth at least a 2-4 week trial to see if this clears up her problems. Take care.

Poor guy. You could try some anatacids. Call your vet to get a dosage since they have seen Hughir and are legally ok to provide the dosage for you. THe best thing to do here though is to let his stomach settle by fasting him for 12 hrs and then slowly introduce small portions of plain boiled chicken or lean ground turkey and white rice for the next few days. Sometimes with a sour stomach it isn't necessarily bad to allow the pet to make themselves vomit a few times to get whatever upset them out of their system. I do hope that Hughir feels better soon! If the vomiting continues then its best to have your vet take a look at him. He likely will need anti-nausea medication to stop the vomiting episodes and get him back on track. With his history of kidney disease, your vet may even just allow you to come by and pick up the medication without having to schedule an appt. Its worth a shot! Best of luck moving forward. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Azrael! Yes, it very likely is the food. A lot of dogs tolerate raw diets but there is a higher risk of food borne pathogens like Salmonella. But regardless of raw vs commercial dog food if he has a food allergy to the protein source (chicken, etc) he will vomit, have diarrhea, lose weight. He may also have inflammatory bowel disease which is usually treated with a special diet as well as steroids. Another possibility is pancreatic conditions like Exocrine Pancreatic insufficiency. EPI is common in German Shepherds and it is when the pancreas doesn't produce the appropriate digestive enzyme and it needs to be supplemented. I would deworm him, do general blood work, do a B12/folate/TLI/PLI test, change his to a prescription hydrolyzed diet like Royal Canin HP or Ultimino or Hill's Z/d or Purina HA. Give him 2 months on that diet to see if his issues resolve. I hope this helps!

Poor Meeka! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including eating something she shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites, the raw diet or even organ disease. Since the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. The diet should be AAFCO certified. Make sure to alert the veterinarian about the diet change. Any immunocompromised people in the clinic need to be cautious (just in case). I am sorry to hear about Gus! I would recommend having his veterinarian examine him with the blood seen in his stool in these photos. Your vet can also discuss his history of vomiting and possible causes. "Grain free" diets are a fad right now, as are raw diets, but there are not proven health benefits to these diets and there are risks. With raw diets we run the risk of bacterial infection such as Salmonella, E. Coli, and Listeria, which can cause bleeding in the GI tract. If he is eating bones (some raw diets include bones) this could also cause injury to the GI tract. We can also have inflammation of the intestinal tract due to food intolerance or parasites cause bleeding, so the safest course of action is to have him examined by the vet and they can discuss the best possible diets for Gus based on his examination and history.

Hello. Raw foods are not always the safest diets to feed because of bacterial contamination, but if Boris is otherwise feeling well, then I would not panic. Normally, I recommend keeping a vomiting dog that acts well & drinking & holding down water, off food for 12-24 hours, & restart with a bland diet of 25% boiled chicken, 75% cooked white rice or a little low fat cottage cheese. But for now, just keep him off his regular food & give him just a very small amount in 12 hours. If he continues to vomit during this fasting period, or he becomes lethargic or develops diarrhea, then it is time to see the veterinarian. I hope he is feeling better soon. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poop eating is usually behavioral or a taste preference. I do not recommend feeding raw especially home made. Home made raw runs the risk of being deficient in nutrients and not appropriately balanced. Raw runs the risk of food born illnesses in the dog and human (salmonella). You can try changing puppy foods and supplementing with a vitamin but it usually isn't due to diet. I would walk Lisa and immediately pick up her stool. have her learn the "leave it" and "come" commands so you can distract her from eating the stool. I like the muzzle gentle leader harnesses as they make it easy to pull the face away from things. Overall it is a disgusting habit that has to be managed by the owner. I wish you and Lisa the best!
