My dog had hookworms, still pale after deworming. Is this normal?

Yes, as the diarrhea is clearing up you can still see bouts of diarrhea at the end of the bowel movement. I would keep adding the rice and cottage in his food for the next 48-72 hours, then slowly take it away until he is eating his normal diet only.

The dose of dewormer is weight dependent so if the same drug was used it is likely the new dog weighs more or they used a different dewormer. A lot of vets use the heart worm prevention as a dewormer because it also takes care of intestinal parasites. It is really Vet preference. I hope this helps!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes, sometimes as the worms are dying off that can result in respiratory issues as they dislodge. Paleness and cold extremities can sometimes be seen in patients that have abnormal oxygen delivery which can happen in these cases. Usually the first 2 weeks are critical when treating for heartworms. I recommend that you him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. It would be good to check if he is having any issues with oxygen delivery. Good luck!

Some pets may need multiple deworming to get rid of all the worms. You must also make sure you have the correct type of dewormer. Some worms are not able to be seen with the naked eye. If Nala has not had her stool examined under a microscope by the veterinarian, I recommend to have this done as it is the most accurate method. Then her stool rechecked 4 weeks after the 2nd round. Be sure to start your dog on a good heartworm preventative like Intercpetor or Sentinel which can help prevent reinfection with Hookworms. If your dog has been off heartworm preventatives have her tested before restarting. I hope this helps and good luck!

How long ago was she treated for Hookworms? Did she receive a second treatment? Typically with Hookworms two treatments are needed. I would also recommend rechecking a stool to make sure she doesn't have any other type of parasites. Did she get into anything recently or any type of new food? For most dogs, symptoms of whipworm would be diarrhea possibly with blood in it, but I wouldn't expect lethargy unless she has so many whipworms that she's anemia. I would recommend letting your vet know this is going on -- they may want her to come back in for evaluation. I'm concerned something else could be going on totally unrelated to the whipworms.
