My dog has an open hole near his penis leaking stool. What is it?

The most common reason that we will see what you are describing if it is close to the anus is an anal gland rupture. It sounds like Smokey may have ruptured an anal gland that became impacted and/or infected. This condition is very painful. I recommend getting him seen by your vet as soon as possible for wound care and probably a course of antibiotics to help him heal faster. They can teach you how to express his anal glands or you can take him in periodically for them to do it for you as he needs it.

Poor guy. He either has really loose stool or an anal gland issues. The anal glands are located inside the rectum and can get infected or even rupture, causing leakage of fluid that is very strong and smelly. I would definitely recommend taking him to your vet on tomorrow if possible to get this looked at. Either condition is very treatable through your vet with medications (i.e. antibiotics). For now, it is best to just wipe the area gently with a wet cloth or paper towel. If the area appears to be irriated, you can also apply a cold compress on the area if he will allow it, for 2-5 mins to help soothe the area. This is most likely due to a ruptured anal gland abscess. Have her examined by your veterinarian for confirmation. Your veterinarian should check the other gland and express (empty) it if necessary. Antibiotics will probably be dispensed. Pain medication may also be dispensed if indicated. place an e-collar (cone) on her to prevent licking until she has healed.

Hi there. From what I can see in the photo, it looks like your girl has a small draining hole just below and to one side of her rectum. Based on the location and overall appearance, I would be suspicious that this may be an abscessed anal sac - these are scent glands that dogs have on either side of their anus, that can sometimes become impacted or infected, and may abscess out through a hole in the skin that looks very similar to this. I would recommend taking your dog to the vet for an exam, to get a better idea of exactly what's going on. Your veterinarian can do a rectal exam to check her anal glands, and if this is the issue, she will likely need prescription medication (antibiotics +/- an anti-inflammatory such as an NSAID or steroid) to effectively treat the infection. If this continues to be a recurring problem, the gland may even need to be surgically removed.

This small red bulge is likely his rectum, and he is clearly pushing very hard if that is appearing. He will be in discomfort if he's straining that hard to poop, and I would have Koda seen by a vet today. It's not normal to have his rectum bulge out when he's trying to pass feces, and he may need medications to stop this.

Hi there, It looks like Wicket either got a cut above his scrotum or has a parasite that has created a wound in that location.
