My puppy was hit by a ball. Are her closing eyes a sign of injury?

Poor Sophie. I would monitor her and if she continue to be sleepy I would have her checked by your vet. Try to offer her a bit of food or her favorite toy and observe her reaction, check if she has balance, if she has appetite, if her attention level is the same compared to other days. Yes, if she has hit her head hard enough to cause these symptoms, I'm afraid that this is definitely an emergency - head trauma is a serious, life-threatening problem in dogs just as it is in people. Even if her symptoms are due to something else, they are still a sign that something is seriously wrong so I would really recommend having her seen regardless. It would be best to take her to your nearest emergency clinic right away for an exam - the vet there can do some diagnostic testing if needed to determine what's wrong and get her started on appropriate treatment.

Hello! Thank you for your post! I would get him seen by a vet to be examined. There is a chance the trauma from the ball could have broken something, dislocated something or caused head trauma. If he has been declining I would get him in to be looked at asap if you are able to.

Masie definitely looks uncomfortable. You can certainly try to flush her eye out at home with water or sterile saline. If you have a syringe or a turkey baster, this would be the best instrument with which to accomplish this. If this doesn't seem to help at all and Masie is still keeping her eye half way closed, she should definitely see a veterinarian. If she did in fact have something in her eye, it is possible that it could have scratched the surface of the eye resulting in a corneal ulcer. Sometimes, when the eyeball becomes irritated, dogs will also begin to scratch and paw at it causing damage. Ultimately, I don't like to mess around the eyes. I suggest having her looked at unless there is a miraculous turnaround and full recovery. Hope this helps!

If your pet hit the wall hard enough with his head, yes it is possible that his brain could have been hurt. A sign of that is one pupil smaller than the other. This is known as anisocoria, and it is a sign of trauma to the brain. If you see this sign in your pet, it's quite serious, and he needs to see a vet immediately.

Hello, if Bubby has an open fontanel on his skull (brain skull not completely formed), then this can cause pets to be confused. He could have hit his head hard enough to have a concussion as well. If he does not start to be more alert within the next 30 minutes, or if he develops additional signs such as seizure and trembling, disorientation, or is not responding then he should be seen immediately by a veterinarian. Keep him head upright without putting him on his back. Hope he feels better soon.

Minnie should go to see the vet as soon as possible. I cannot diagnose her without seeing her in person, but based on your description and her photo I am very concerned she could have a condition called congenital hydrocephalus, which causes fluid buildup in the skull. Unfortunately medical treatment is often not curative and surgery may be needed. As I say, I cannot say that this is her problem for certain, but she needs an exam by a vet to determine if it could be the source of her abnormality.
