Why is my dog in heat unwell and stretching like she has cramps?

It is possible but since Piper can’t talk, and I can’t preform a physical exam, I can’t say for sure. Back pain, gut pain or a bladder infection are all possible. I recommend to be safe and have her seen by her veterinarian. If she checks out normally, a heating pad applied to her lower abdomen may help-make sure it’s not too hot though, pets can get burned! Seasons in dogs are usually not related to low energy levels and lethargy. If you also noticed that Brava is drinking excessively and is off food you should take her to your vet to make sure that she doesn't have uterine infection. Regarding pain relief- we don't think that seasons are painful to dogs so we generally don't recommend pain killers for that.

It sounds like Lucy is painful from the surgery, and if she was prescribed pain medication, I would make sure to give that to her as prescribed. Should she not have pain meds, I would call your vet now to speak to them about getting her some. Please do not give her any human pain medications, many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

A dog pregnancy lasts between 58 and 68 days with an average of 63 days. If she is in that range, labor is a possibility. Lucy should be examined by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER to confirm pregnancy or to diagnose illness or injury. If she is an older dog, uterine infection (pyometra) is a possibility. There is nothing OTC that you can safely give her for relief.

You should definitely take her for an exam ASAP, as she isn't spayed and is suffering from pain in the abdominal area, a uterine infection would be the first suspicion, but it could of course be something else such as a gastrointestinal problem. This could be due to the obvious discomfort if her being in heat but it could also be due to anal gland blockage. You should take her to the vet in order to get it checked if you think she is in serious discomfort.

Pain is not common during a dog's heat cycle, however hormonal changes can cause some behavioral changes in dogs while they are in heat. If she is appearing in pain or is having odd symptoms in addition to her heat cycle it is best to have a veterinarian exam her. Do NOT give any over the counter medications without veterinary instruction as they could harm or make Panda very ill. If you do not wish to have puppies, having Panda spayed after her heat cycle is finished may be beneficial.
