Is my 9-month-old female dog in heat? Brown fluid & swollen privates.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Odesia. When a dog comes into heat, her mammary chain and vulva will swell. She will have a blood tinged discharge. A heat cycle lasts approximately 18-21 days. Spaying her prior to her first heat cycle will prevent this from occurring. Most dogs come into heat for the first time around 7-10 months of age with larger breeds starting their cycles later. If she goes into heat, doggy diapers with a feminine hygiene pad are an easy way to keep her clean. I hope this information helps!

This is definitely possible that she is already back in heat. She could also have an infection so be sure to keep an eye out for any abnormal behavior like not eating, lethargy, or vomiting. If you see any abnormal behavior or just want to be sure, I would have your vet take a look at her to ensure she is healthy. I would not breed her during this heat cycle since she just had a litter. Female dogs bleed in pre-estrus, which is the two or three weeks before the actual estrus or heat during which they can conceive. This will then actually last about two to three weeks and her vulva and nipples will remain swollen due to the increase in hormones. So, actually she is now in heat and can conceive, so you need to guard her, if you do not want puppies.

Based on what you are describing it sounds like it. Although 6 months is average, every dog is different and it can start earlier than this. In regards to your question about Olie having her first heat cycle - on average a dog will have their first heat cycle between 6-12 months of age. It is hard to determine right now at her 2 month age exactly when her first heat cycle will be but it will be several months from now. If you want to take extra precaution during her heat cycle you can have her wear a cloth or disposable diaper to help with the "mess". She does not need to wear cloths and you do not have to change her normal healthy diet. You should take extra precaution when she goes into heat that there will be intact male dogs seeking her out to try and breed with her. If your intention is not for her to have puppies than it is very important to keep her away from intact male dogs during this time of her heat cycle or she will be bred. If you do not wish for her to have puppies it would be best to have her spayed prior to her first heat cycle by your veterinarian. Best of luck with your sweet puppy Olie.

Hi and thanks for posting this morning. It sounds like Penelope is having her first estrus or 'heat' cycle. Dogs come into heat twice a year- once in the spring and once in the fall. Dogs do not have menstrual cycles like humans do- they are quite different. Small drops may be all you will notice-that is normal. Each estrus cycle lasts for about 4 weeks or so, the vaginal discharge she is experiencing may last for two weeks. No need to take her into your veterinarian unless you are still concerned, but it sounds like her estrus cycle has begun which is normal to start for smaller dog around 9 months-1 year of age. The ovulation in dogs usually happens between 8 and 12 day from the beginning of the season (so from the day you noticed that she is bleeding). At that time the discharge becomes light red or pink. If this is day 10 for Daisy, you should take her to the stud dog and see if she will be receptive. If not, repeat the visit in 2 days time.
