My dog hates paw touching for baths or trims. Is this normal?

I can't see anything abnormal with the paw based on these pictures, some dogs just hate being touched in the paws, if he is not limping you should not worry about it but i do recommend having his nails clipped in the near future.

Tigre may have endured being 'quicked' when his nails were trimmed last time or before which is when the nail is trimmed a little too close to the quick and it bleeds. This is common and often happens what the nail is overgrown. Having a nail cut a little too close can be a bit painful and is often a cause of dog's anxiety or fear of nail trimming. However, there are a few ways to get Tigre to have a better association with the clippers but it will take work and practice. You can begin by just touching his paws. Reward calm behavior while touching paws with tasty treat. Begin slowly and gradually work up to longer and longer sessions. Once he feels comfortable with touching the paw, hold the paw with your hand and progress to touching her nails, adding pressure to the nail that will simulate a trim. Reward calm behavior during this with treat. Once he feel comfortable with you holding and manipulating the nail, you can introduce the clippers. Gently tap the nail with the clippers and reward calm behavior during this. Clip the clippers without actually clipping the nail to get him use to the sound. Again reward when calm during this. Gradually work into clipping the nails. Start with one nail at a time, rewarding each time he is calm during the trimming. Go slow and always reward good behavior with tasty treat. Hello, I'm sorry to hear that Sadie is so uncomfortable. Chewing and licking at their paws can be caused by a couple different things. Often times it's an allergy to something that causes irritation and redness. This causes the paws to feel itchy which is why dogs will chew and bite. It could also be that Sadie has been bitten by something which is causing her to feel the itchiness. That typically wouldn't last as long and it wouldn't be affecting all of her paws. Allergies in dogs can be caused by an allergic reaction to something they are eating or by something in their environment. Examples of something in the environment could be laundry detergent, something blooming in the area where they play, or something they're just constantly coming into contact with that is irritating them. At home you can try a mild oatmeal-based shampoo that you can buy at the grocery store. Give Sadie a bath with the shampoo and make sure you let it sit on her skin for about 10 minutes before rinsing. If this does not seem to help I would recommend getting an appointment with your veterinarian to make sure she doesn't have a secondary infection that is causing her to be uncomfortable. I would not advise using any creams for her because licking those off her feet could be dangerous and make her sick. Good luck and I hope she feels better soon.

I recommend to leave his paws as they are since he has no signs of pathology. The paws will roughen in response to his environment. Softening the paws may make them more prone to injury. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Sometimes cats and dogs can have personality changes like this especially if she had a bad experience with with restraint, pain or something else fearful happening while she had a nail trim (ie a car back firing while she had the nails cut). It is possible that she may have some pain in that foot that she did not show the veterinarian. Cats can get a epinephrine rush when they go to the vet and they may not show pain at that time. Watch her very closely for limping on that paw. You can try to create a positive association again by having her look at the trimmers and then get treats. It could be that the texture of the Epsom salt caused Roxie to act a little differently, and she wanted to get it off her paw because she didn't like the feel of it on her. It's not something I would be concerned about, I hope this helps!

Hi, I think they could do with a trim but the reason why he is yelping is probably because he is not used to have his nails trimmed. All dogs react to having them done unless they got used to the whole process gradually and with positive reinforcement. Have a look on you tube on several ways to get them used to have their nails done, you would normally start by him accepting to have his paws touched and praising, giving treats. If you are in doubt, you could always ask a behaviourist or a reputable dog trainer to help.
