My dog has a hard, painless bump under his jaw. What should I do?

So, yes, you should take him to your vet for an exam. It is not an emergency; just try to get him an appointment in the next week or so. Hi and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I notice the bump on Clover but unfortunately, it is generally impossible to tell what the lump is based on appearance alone. It can be anything from a bug bite (especially since it has gotten smaller), a mass, an abscess, a cyst, a salivary gland or something else. If it is not bothering her right now and does not get bigger, I would monitor her. If it is still there in the morning, I would contact your veterinarian. Your vet may want to feel the area and determine if additional diagnostics are warranted such as a fine needle aspirate OR something else if it does not seem like a mass/cyst/abscess. Good luck!

Based on these photos, it does appear there is a little dot at the center of the lump, and you could be correct that this is some sort of insect bite. I would watch this lump over the next week or two. As long as it is slowly getting smaller, then I would not be concerned, however, if there is no change over the next couple of weeks, or it is getting bigger, firm, red, or painful, then seek veterinary attention. This looks like it could be an insect bite or sting, or a tick bite if they are in your area. Skin infections can also occasionally start this way. If you start to see more lesions similar to the one above, or if this bump begins to increase in size or have any discharge I would recommend having it examined by your veterinarian. If it is an insect bite it should be gone in the next 7-10 days or so. Monster is a handsome guy!

This looks like it could be a growth and it's clearly bothering him if he's biting at it. Any suspicious lumps should be examined by the vet. The vet can perform a test called a fine needle aspirate on it. To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of its cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. Once the cause of the lump is diagnosed, the vet can discuss treatment options if needed. Should the lump get bigger, starts to bother him, he has trouble eating, becomes lethargic, or anorexic, then I would rush into an ER vet right away. This looks like an epulis, a fairly common benign tumor in dogs. It occurs more often in short faced dog breeds. I recommend getting it checked by your vet to determine what kind of growth it is and what needs to be done about it. Your vet will do an exam, lab work, possibly imaging depending on if you vet believes they need it. Based on these results your vet will be better able to tell you what is going on and the best course of treatment.
