My dog is hacking and has a swollen neck gland. Should I see a vet?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Luca! How old is Luca? He could have a swollen lymph node or salivary gland. A swollen salivary gland can indicate an infection, an obstruction or inflammation. An enlarged lymph node can indicate an infection or lymphoma (cancer) the swelling could also be a foreign body that migrated from him mouth (piece of stick for example). Luca needs an exam by a Vet, I would have him seen Monday. I wish you the best!

The cells are then evaluated under the microscope to determine if it is a lymph node, infection, salivary gland or a mass. Based in these results treatment can be recommended if necessary. Please, take Martha to your local vets to confirm the diagnosis and to start treatment for her. If it is an abscess, Martha will need a course of antibiotics and possibly lancing of the abscess. If it is salivary gland cyst, your vet will likely recommend surgery as conservative treatment for salivary cysts does not provide satisfactory results.

How treatable lymphadenopathy is depends largely on what is causing it. For example, mild regional lymphadenopathy secondary to an infection is likely curable as long as the infection is taken care of. On the other hand, lymphadenopathy can be observed with cancers like lymphoma which is not a curable disease though this is more when all the lymph nodes are enlarged. I recommend you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. They can perform a fine needle aspirate which can help reach a diagnosis and then treat accordingly. Good luck!

Oh my, that is quite swollen, and I'd be concerned that this swelling could increase and affect her breathing. This is a medical emergency and cannot be treated at home. Hello. Is the hacking constant, accompanied by any retching? This is not good if she is & probably needs to see a vet tonight. If not, are her gums a nice bubble gum pink? This is a good sign. Will she take a little food or water? This too is a good sign. Weigh the signs & see if this might just be some kind of tracheal irritation. Sometimes a teaspoon of honey every couple of hours can be very soothing. See how she does over the next hour or so & if you are at all concerned, it is always best to be safe than sorry, but if she seems pretty comfortable you can see how the honey works for her. HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Knuckles! I would make an appointment for Knuckles to see his Vet. The swelling can be from an infected or inflamed salivary gland or lymph node. He could also have an abscess from foreign material penetrating the mouth or from the outside, be experiencing an allergic reaction or possibly even have a tooth root abscess. An enlarged lymph node can also be from lymphoma, a type of cancer. Usually though more than one lymph node is swollen if a dog has lymphoma. I hope this helps and I wish Knuckles a speedy recovery!
