Dog finished giardia meds, but stinky poop returned. Continue treatment?

Hi and thanks for your question. If the diarrhea starts again after the metronidazole, it could any number of issues. If she was diagnosed with a parasite, like Giardia, or a bacteria, it could be she still has the parasite or bacterial present in her GI and will need another round of metronidazole. That is not totally uncommon. A viral infection may be another possibility as well as a food allergy or inflammatory bowel disease. I hope this helped!

Hi, If it is only diarrhea and otherwise Luna is active, no vomiting and eating, I would for now change the her food to a bland diet of boiled chicken breast and rice. It may be worth it to bring a few different samples of her faces so you can bring it with you to the vet appointment. But I suggest you wait with the antibiotics until you discuss it with the vet tomorrow.

I recommend to call your veterinarian. When pets don't respond to treatment as expected, it can mean that the real cause of illness has not been identified. The veterinarian may try a different medication or recommend further diagnostics such as a fecal culture, parasite testing or ultrasound. A stool sample should be submitted to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. A veterinary probiotic such as Prostora, FortiFlora or ProViable may promote gut health.

It would not be a good idea to stop metronidazole now and the symptoms may come back. Please, complete 5 days of treatment and then double-check with your vet that it is ok to stop the medication. The dose of metronidazole Leo was prescribed is ok (100mg every 12hrs).

Hello. If this is what his poop looks like now, I would not worry just because it was a little off color & smells. The medicine is probably doing this. As long as he continues to eat & drink, have normal, formed stools, finish his antibiotics as prescribe by your veterinarian & hopefully Billy will continue to do very well.
