My puppy is 12 weeks old. Can he get my pneumonia if I'm sick?

This may be due to an upper respiratory infection that could be now affecting the lower respiratory system as well such as kennel cough. It is very important that you have Teddy evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to gather more information and proceed with an exam to determine what would be best at this point. They are likely going to consider prescribing antibiotics. I am hoping for a speedy recovery!

What your 6 month old dog has could be contagious and could be very very dangerous to the puppies, keep them separate and make sure you are washing your hands and clothes between petting and interacting with the older dog and the puppies. If the puppies are breathing well and the discharge is clear they are likely ok, but if they start breathing heavy, are weak, not eating, or losing weight (weigh the puppies daily) then I would get them to a vet right away. Also, it sounds like your 6 month old is very very sick and needs to be seen by a vet right away. Best of luck with all your doggies!

Hello, my name is Dr. Elizabeth and I am happy to help. I hate to hear D was sick but it sounds like he is improving, which is great. And congrats on the new puppy, how exciting! I think your concern is warranted as you don't want the new puppy to get sick. In general, pets are considered not contagious if they haven't been coughing for a week. Or once they start antibiotics, generally they will not be contagious (assuming they respond well as expected) within a week into therapy. These are generalized assumptions but keep in mind, every pet is different. Personally, I would want the antibiotic on board for 10 days AND no coughing for 10 days before I would bring home a puppy. I would also clean the house really well including washing all dogs beds/blankets, vacuuming and mopping to decrease bacteria and viruses in the environment. If possible, have the breeder go ahead and give the Bordetella vaccine (ideally a week or longer ) before the new puppy is due to arrive at your house. Yes, he could have pneumonia. It is best to have him to a vet for an exam because if that is the case, he will need antibiotics (at the minimum) to recover. Remember, puppies have an under-developed immune system (just like human babies) so they are more susceptible to infections. Please take him to a vet as soon as possible.

First off, I'm extremely sorry you lost three puppies. That is terrible and please accept my condolences for your loss. It is extremely rare that a puppy or dog could catch the flu from a human (not a silly question!), so it's unlikely that is the cause. Unfortunately puppies are quite fragile, and there are some that do not make it. You sound like you have been very lucky to have never lost puppies like this before! It truly can happen, and there is nothing you could have done to prevent it. Nine is a big litter too, and these puppies may have just been more fragile than the others, or weren't getting enough milk. Again, I'm sorry.

Because Amelia hasn't lost her appetite and is behaving normally, I would not be concerned about pneumonia. If she does lose her appetite and becomes very lethargic, then I would be concerned and I would have her seen by a vet. If she does seem congested, you can put in her in a room with a humidifier, or you can take her into the bathroom with you when you shower. The steam may help temporarily relieve her congestion.
