My dog is pooping a lot and her rear looks red. Is she okay?

This looks like Bear has soft stool, close to diarrhea. The red color could be caused by the color of his dogfood, but it could also be a little blood. If Bear is happy, does not appear ill, lethargic , eats and drinks you can do the following: Diarrhea can have many causes such as a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast Bear for 24 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or he starts vomiting, or if Bear gets lethargic, he needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

This is pretty normal. I wouldn't worry unless you notice excessive licking of the area or scooting which could mean anal glands are clogged. That would require expressing from a professional groomer or veterinarian.

I’m sorry to hear Pompom isn’t feeling well. If she is straining to poop but her stools are soft, it may be that she’s got some colitis (inflammation in her colon). Another concern would be a mass or tumor in her colon. I would recommend that you have your vet examine her. They may recommend a fecal exam, possibly some blood work or X-rays. An abdominal ultrasound (sonogram of the belly) may also help determine what’s going on. Even if you aren’t financially able to approve diagnostics, your vet will probably be able to prescribe some medication to help make her feel better. As far as something soothing for the skin on her bum, I would recommend a wound healing ointment made for dogs, you can likely find at PetCo or another pet store. Another option would be A and D ointment —the brown ointment, NOT the cream as it contains zinc oxide. . DO NOT USE A PRODUCT CONTAINING ZINC OXIDE (often in diaper rash creams). Again, my best recommendation would be to get her in to your vet as soon as you can. Good luck to you and Pompom! She is such a cutie! I hope she’s feeling better soon.

He may be scooting on his rear due to his anal sacs being full or from intestinal parasites causing itching in the area. I recommend an exam to check and express his anal sacs. They can get full and become itchy and infected if the fluid isn’t emptied. Usually dogs express some of this fluid when they defecate but the opening can become plugged and the fluid builds up and can become infected. Dogs with tapeworms can have tapeworm segments come out the anus and be around the fur by the anal opening. This can cause itching and make the anal opening inflammed. You can give canned pumpkin with wet food and green beans to increase the water and fiber in the diet. That can help with the constipation. I do recommend an exam and have them empty the anal sacs. The brownish red anus is likely due to the underlying gastritis/inflammation of the gut and the repeated defecation due to the diarrhea. The straining to defecate is probably because Tango is empty from having so much diarrhea. (Poor guy!). You should follow the bland diet directions provided by your veterinarian. There is no need to go to the ER vet now. However, if the diarrhea does not resolve within the next 24 hours despite the bland diet, you will need to take Tango back to your veterinarian or to the ER vet if your regular vet is unavailable.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Diarrhea resolving can take a few days, so it is normal that it isn't as solid as normal. The straining however isn't normal. I would recommend checking to make sure around her anus looks ok (no bleeding or wounds), and if you can feel under her anus at the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions, does it feel like hard marbles are under the skin. If this is the case she could have full anal glands which can be making her uncomfortable in her back end. This would require a vet visit to empty them before they burst. Otherwise, as long as she is eating/playing, I would just monitor her to see if the behaviour continues. If she is still straining tomorrow I would take Riley to the vet to make sure she isn't constipated, but it might just be a one-off episode. If her next poop is normal without straining then I wouldn't worry about it. Best of luck with Riley!

As long as Isabelle is behaving normally, you can watch her at home. Consider a 24 hour fast, allowing small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food and gradually increase the amount if no other symptoms develop. Feed bland until the stool is normal then transition slowly to her regular diet. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. if any of these symptoms develop, have Isabelle physically examined by your vet.
