Rusty on dog care: How much food and water should my new dog get?

Updated on September 23, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 4 months old | 30 lbs

I just got this dog and am a little rusty on dog ownership I've been giving her about 2 cups of dry dog food twice a day. Is that enough or too much? should I just leave out a self-dispensing water container? I don't know if I should regulate her water intake.

Hi there and thanks for asking the question about Roni. I would not regulate her water intake. Fresh water available at all times is important. The dog food should have a recommendation on the back of the bag. For spayed dogs I would start on the low end of the recommended amount and then adjust up if she starts losing weight. Best of luck and enjoy your new dog Roni! Thank you for using Pet Coach.
