My dog is foaming at mouth after shots. Is this a vaccine reaction?

I'm so sorry Mayor is having this problem. Unfortunately, puppies can cough enough that they cough up foam. I would recommend contacting your vet. They may have you take Mayor's temperature at home to see if he is running a fever. We see a lot of upper respiratory diseases in puppies that are contageous, so they may or may not want you to bring him in to the vet. Be sure to let them know if he is lethargic and not eating or just coughing. Hello. It is not unusual for a puppy to feel a little unwell after receiving vaccinations, but these reactions rarely require treatment. Most symptoms will pass in 12-24 hours. If Baxter is otherwise feeling OK, or sleeping quietly, then leave him be. But if the vomiting is intractable, or he develops any diarrhea, quits eating & becomes significantly lethargic please see your veterinarian as soon as possible. It isn't entirely uncommon for dogs to feel sore and puny after a round of vaccines - just like people can. They can cause soreness at the area of injection and mild general malaise, which would explain Snapple's unwillingness to move and whimpering when you try to touch her. This will probably abate over the next day, but if you notice any other symptoms such as swelling, difficulty breathing, vomiting, or diarrhea, please call your vet as these may indicate a more serious reaction. This is very unlikely as most severe vaccine reactions occur within an hour of the shots, but it is always better to be safe than sorry. If she's still acting puny tomorrow, feel free to call your vet and let them know. They may be able to recommend or prescribe an anti-inflammatory/pain reliever that will make her feel much better. Any time I have administered a vaccination and the animal then begins vomiting or exhibiting any other abnormal symptoms, I treat as a potential adverse vaccination reaction. I would recommend taking him back to the veterinarian that performed the vaccination to have him examined and treated for a potential vaccination reaction. If it is not the vet who vaccinated him make sure to let them know he had a reaction so they can note in his chart and report it to the vaccine company. I hope Theo feels better soon.

The stereotypical image of rabies is a dog with foam all around their mouths, but the reality is that this is not actually seen that often and can be seen normally in a dog that just exercised. The reason for the foam forming around their mouths with rabies is that they are not able to swallow when infected with rabies. This causes them to drool more and potentially develop this foam if they are barking/vocalizing a lot. Rabies also causes a dramatic change in behavior. The dog will either be very stuporous, or extremely aggressive. Rabies is spread through saliva, but requires a direct inoculation under the skin (usually by biting). Touching the saliva of a rabid dog is not very risky for contracting the disease; unless you have a cut or sore that is in contact with the saliva. It's also much less likely for a vaccinated dog to acquire rabies. It may be that he overdid it on the exercise, became overheated, and that caused the foaming of the mouth. If he seems fine now, I'd keep an eye on him at the moment.
