Why are my dog's fleas smaller, slower, and falling off after meds?

Flea infestation and scratching because of it can cause the hair to fall out. However, mite infection (mange can also cause hairloss and vigorous scratching. I suggest you take Spade to a veterinarian to determine whether Spade has mange mites. Treatment for those is easy: Bravecto will kill them as well as fleas and ticks and will last a few months. I'm sorry you are having such problems with fleas! I have personally found, as have a number of my colleagues, that there is resistance to Frontline and pets continue to have problems with them despite applying the Frontline. I will give you the flea treatment program I typically recommend and have found to be very effective. First, I would give Shadow Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment, this is very important. Wash his bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. You may have to flea bomb the house a few times to kill all the fleas. My brother had a problem with fleas in his home, and the exterminator had to visit three times before they were all gone. I hope this helps!

The flea and tick shampoo is better than fish soap. BUT there are much better ways to treat fleas. So when you give Lunar Moon a bath, you are only killing the fleas that are currently on her and the ones that will jump on her within the next 24 hours, then it wears off. Female fleas lay 50 eggs every single day and these eggs will hatch in 3 to 6 months. So every day you have new fleas hatching out in the environment. A better method to get rid of the fleas are to treat every single pet in the house with a reputable flea product. I recommend Simparica or Nexgard for most dogs. If you want to stick with an over-the-counter product, stick with frontline. Keep in mind though that frontline is now an older product and fleas are developing an immunity to it which means it may not work as well. Environmental cleanup will help with the problem, but it will not illuminate every single flea egg. You must treat for a solid six months in order to get through the whole flea lifecycle. When you have a heavy flea infestation, you also have to disinfect the environment as well. Wash theirs bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home. Dogs who have heavy flea infestations can also develop flea allergies, which would lead them to continue to be itchy and may affect the fur growing back. I would take them both back into the vet, and the vet can discuss if they do have flea allergies and how to treat them. Fleas and allergies to fleas can set-up an environment for infection. It's possible that this is complicating the recovery process. The skin will often start to heal once the fleas are gone, but it's worth treating for infection by giving a bath with a medicated dog shampoo (can get this at the pet store). It's best to just give a bath with the medicated shampoo once every 2-3 days, until the skin starts to look normal. It's expected that it will take a month or more until Buddy starts to look normal again, so stick with it and he should get through this fine. Treating for fleas is not just restricted to the host, because fleas can reproduce and nest in the environment and continually cause an issue.
