My dog took a flea pill. Can I still use flea shampoo and topical?

I would recommend using caution if the flea/tick shampoo and the topical product both contain permethrins, particularly if you have a small dog. I recommend avoiding all over the counter products containing permethrins for cats since they are prone to toxicity. If you use a flea/tick shampoo with permethrin and a topical product that has a different active ingredient it should be safer. An even safer alternative would be to use blue Dawn dishsoap for bathing, followed by flea combing and then applying a topical product.

It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas in 30 minutes and is safe to give along with a topical treatment. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Unfortunately Hartz is a very poor product and extremely ineffective. I would not recommend using it again. You can give Bella Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas in 30 minutes and it's safe to give now. I would wash her to try to get the oily residue off, but you can't give her another spot on treatment until two weeks have passed. During this two weeks, it is safe to give Capstar daily (only one a day) to keep killing the fleas. After the two weeks have passed, I would apply a better quality flea treatment such as Revolution or Advantage. Keep in mind as well you have to disinfect the environment. Wash her bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. Fleas are the worst but the good news is that you can effectively get rid of them if you use a good product and are diligent in the treatment. The key to getting rid of fleas is to make sure EVERY dog and cat in the house is treated with a good flea prevention AND that this treatment lasts an entire 6 months. Your vet can give you access to the best flea products on the market. Oral flea products like Simparica, Nexgard and Bravecto are the best products out there because they kill fleas so quickly. This decreased to potential for the female fleas to lay eggs which breaks the life cycle. Since the product is in the bloodstream, it also can't be washed off. Lastly, because they are new, there is not a resistance issue in the flea population. They are also cost competitive with a name brand product like Frontline. I recommend to get Smallie on one of these oral flea products and use it for 6 months. If you use a topical flea prevention, only wash Smallie just before the next application of flea prevention is due. Topical flea products like the one you applied can be washed off which means they won't work as well. Also know you will likely continue to see fleas for at least 6 weeks (assuming your product is working correctly) because of the newly emerging adult fleas. Lastly, know there is great variation in the effectiveness of topical flea products. As far as they go, for over the counter options, Seresto, name brand Frontline and Advantage/Advantix are your best options. Use them as directed. It usually takes 3-6 months of consistent monthly application of a quality flea preventative to rid a flea infestation. The ingredient in the Hartz Duel Action topical is unlikely to work very well for fleas. I suggest using a product like Frontline Plus, Advantix, Bravecto or Vextra for fleas as these tend to work better in my experience. I suggest thoroughly bathing Lil Feet to get rid of the Hartz topical and then apply one of the products listed above. You should do this monthly for at least 3-6 months to get rid of the problem. If the infestation is really bad you may need to have your house treated. If you are still seeing many fleas after a month or so you should schedule an examination with your veterinarian. There could be several reasons why Sonny still has fleas. First I will say that it will take a full 6 months before the fleas are finally gone and you will still see fleas for the first month or so as the numbers are still high at this point. Secondly, over the counter prods tend to be old so fleas are more likely to be immune to them. Currently the best products are oral products such as Comfortis or Simparica. I would recommend to switch to one of those. Lastly, when you use a flea shampoo after using a topical flea product, you generally wash off the topical product. So I would not recommend to use the shampoo if you want to continue using a topical product. If you switch to an oral product, the shampoo will not effect it.
