Dog eye swollen and rubbing after plant contact. What can I do?

Poor girl. Because she is keeping her eye closed, it is very likely she has a scratch or ulcer on her cornea (eye surface). Because of this type of injury, Suziee Lu will need to see your vet to have the eye checked. If there is a scratch, as suspected, then she will need topical prescription eye medication to get this to heal properly. It is ok to wipe the outside of the lid with warm salt water until you can get her in to your vet for further care. Try to get her seen soon to avoid further trauma to the eye which may be irreversible. I hope that Suzie Lu's eye injury resolves soon! Best of luck and take care. : )

I am so sorry to hear that Moose is experiencing these problems with his eye. Thank you for providing an excellent picture, it seems swollen red and has discharge. Because of the sudden nature of the presentation, I would be concerned that Moose has suffered a corneal ulceration or has a foreign body lodged in his eye lid. Start by placing an e-collar or cone on Moose to prevent scratching or rubbing. If the eye is infected it is likely painful, this will prompt Mosoe to scratch or rub his eye. However, this could inflict further damage, infection or even an ulceration. Because eye concerns with dogs, such as infections, corneal ulcerations, cataracts and glaucoma, can progress rapidly, I would have him examined by your veterinarian to diagnose the issue. The precise medication can then be dispensed by your veterinarian. Please do not attempt to treat an eye infection at home with any over the counter medications, drops or ointments. I worry that she has a scratch on her cornea or inflammation secondary to being hit in the eye by the plant. When it comes to eye injuries it is best to have the pet seen as soon as possible. A scratch on the cornea is treated with antibiotic drops or ointment in the eye and inflammation is treated with pain medications and steroids. I hope this hope and I wish Baylee boo a speedy recovery!

Hi, I would recommend to have it checked over to make sure there is nothing behind the eye lid, such as thorn, and no damage to eye cornea such as a scratch for example. Normally conjunctivitis is bilateral whilst here it looks like an unilateral problem so could it be she has caused a scracth to the eyelid or the eye surface. Hope this makes sense and that Kiera is back to her normal self soon.

Poor Alpha! The most common reasons for swollen eyes are bee strings/bug bites or an allergic reaction (of which you generally never know the cause). Trauma or something stuck in the eye could also cause swelling in the area. Carefully check the area for any stingers or marks. You can apply a cold (not cold) compress to the area. Unfortunately, unless you find a stinger, you won't know the cause. You must also protect the area from rubbing with an elizabethan collar since rubbing could make it worse. I recommend to play it safe and have Alpha examined by the veterinarian today. The doctor will check the eye as well as look for clues as to the cause. If an allergic reaction is suspected, he will likely receive an injectable antihistamine and possible a steroid or anti-inflammatory. Just like with humans, some pets may experience an anaphylactic reaction. Monitor your dog for signs of an allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, general weakness or a progression of swelling. If you see any of those signs this could indicate a serious anaphylactic reaction and you need to take him into the vet immediately. Also, if the swelling doesn't go down after 24 hours, take him into your vet. Best of luck.

He looks to be generally itchy. I'm suspicious of allergies causing this, but it could be due to mange, fleas, or other causes. The eye may be a separate problem, or related to the allergies. Without seeing it, it's difficult to tell the cause of this, or the severity, but the fact that it's swollen shut warrants a visit to the vet. I recommend having him seen by a vet within the next 24 hours to prevent serious complications with the eye. The vet can also help narrow-down the cause of the itch and provide medication to help give him some relief. One thing you can do for itchy skin, is give a bath with cool water using an oatmeal or aloe shampoo. You can get these shampoos at the pet store. For now, you can flush the eye with normal saline. Saline flush can be bought at the pharmacy, or supermarket in the eye care section. Flush the eye 3-4 times daily and gently wipe away the discharge with a warm/moist cotton or cloth.
