My dog woke up with one eye rolled up. What's wrong with her eye?

Poor Angel! This could be caused by a few things including getting something stuck in her eye, a viral infection or getting a scratch on the cornea. All of these conditions need to be addressed by the veterinarian and she is also in pain (that's why the eye is closed). Hi! Yes, for sure there is something wrong with Lily's eyes. She looks like she is squinting, and the third eyelids are up. Sometimes dogs look like this when they are feeling unwell in general, especially if they have a fever. Or, the eyes could be the main problem. She could have scratched the surface of her eyes (this is called corneal ulcers), or possibly an eye infection. Ideally, she needs to be checked out by her vet. They can examine her, and have a close look at her eyes. There a few tests your vet can run on Lily's eyes, to help sort out what the problem is. I hope she feels better soon!

It's a bit blurry, but it looks like the third eyelid (aka nicitating membrane) is covering the eye. This usually happens when the eye is damaged (scratched or punctured), in pain from an infection, or something is stuck inside the eyelid. It's best if you can flush under the eyelid with normal saline. You can make saline at home with salt and water if you don't have any, or you can't buy any. This is a condition known as ventrolateral strabismus, which indicates that the there is damage to either the muscles or nerves that are attached to the eye ball. This can happen with infections, trauma, or tumors. It's best to have Nelly seen by a vet sometime soon, so they can check her for any life-threatening problems that can be potentially treated. Hello, sorry to hear about Poli. There are several things that could make dogs eyes painful so that they have to squint and tearful. Most commonly, especially if this happened suddenly, a corneal scratch or ulcer could be causing this. Corneal ulcers can take a couple of days to heal but require ointments and sometimes even lenses to protect the cornea thus allowing it to heal. Corneal ulcers can occur due to trauma, a foreign body, an eye infection, or even abnormal eye lashes or hair. Unfortunately these are quite painful and should be evaluated by your veterinarian so that they can give her any medications she may need. Other less common but more aggressive things that can cause her signs include things such as glaucoma, uveitis, and foreign bodies. These can also be ruled out by your veterinarian. It's a bit hard to tell from the photos exactly what's going on, but it looks like her third eyelid is elevated in the right eye - that's the pale-colored membrane that you can see in the inner corner of her eye. It also looks like the area surrounding the eye may be a bit swollen. These symptoms could be caused by a number of different things, so she would really need an in-person exam and possibly some testing to diagnose the problem. Conjunctivitis or an injury to the eye such as a corneal ulcer can cause swelling and third eyelid elevation. She could also have an abscess or tumor behind the eye, causing it to bulge outward and have this appearance. Treatment will depend on what the underlying problem is, so I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to.

Poor Hawk! I'm wondering if the bulging part of his eye that you are seeing is his third eyelid. This is a normal part of a dog's anatomy that is used to wipe tears across the eye, and comes out when the dog's eye is closed, such as when they are sleeping. If it is out when a dog's eye is open, that is a sign a medical problem. Given that his eye is slightly watery, I would think he has an eye infection, may have sustained some trauma to his eye, or he could have a foreign body in his eye. Any eye problem should be considered an emergency, as leaving it untreated could lead to vision loss. I would take Hawk into a vet now. The vet can diagnose what is causing these symptoms in his eye, and can treat accordingly.
