Why does my dog express anal glands only on my girlfriend's lap?

These are two little glands inside the dog's rectum. They naturally fill with a material that ranges from thin, light colored liquid to a thick paste. When a dog defecated, this material is released -- most of the time not all of the liquid is release but over the course of each defecation, enough is released that the glands do not overfill. With some dogs though, this process does not occur as easily. This can be due to the material being too thick to be expressed, the stool being too soft or diarrhea which does not apply enough force to the gland to express the fluids or due to an underlying disease process. The most common cause of recurrently full anal glands is an underlying allergy problem. Dogs with skin sensitivity or allergies often have anal glands that need to be emptied on a routine basis. If the glands become too full, the material can become infected or the gland can rupture. In this case, the area will heal but antibiotics are typically needed. After the anal glands are expressed, the area can continue to feel irritating for a few days. In some cases though, the glands may not have been completely emptied. This is often the case if the glands are emptied at a groomers as they empty them from the outside and are not trained to empty them rectally as a vet would. Most dogs do not need their glands emptied for any medical purpose but if the glands were randomly checked, they could be moderately full. This does not indicate a need to express the material though. The reason I bring this up is because I have found that if we begin emptying the glands for the dog, it creates a cyclic effect where we continue to have to empty them. If the dog is scooting, this is an indication to have them checked.

Sometimes dog will express there glands while licking them or going to the restroom. I would not be concerned as long as Rhea is not scooting or constantly licking her rectum. If you feel like she is irritated by her glands I would have a doctor check them. Poor Buddy! This is a common behavior when they have full anal glands. Anal glands are 2 glands, one on each side of the anus, that holds a foul smelling material. They are there to help naturally lubricate a dog's bowel movements, but not all dogs properly express them. I would take him to your vet clinic and see if they can express his anal glands. Also, he could also act this way and lick everything if he is really itchy, anxious or just uncomfortable. If he doesn't improve after his anal glands are expressed, then I would have your vet take a look at him to ensure he doesn't have an infection or something else going on causing these behaviors. Anal glands are sometimes difficult to determine what causes them to fill up quickly and why they don't empty on their own. What we typically recommend is switching the diet completely to a different brand / formula and adding in supplementation for the anal glands such as Glandex (which can be purchased online). I've known Glandex to reduce the time between anal gland expressions by months and sometimes the diet switch alone makes a big difference. Try this for a few months and if the problem persists after, I would speak with your veterinarian about other options. I hope this helps! Every pet is different and some pets may need their glands expressed every few weeks. Most however will be less frequent. This can be a problem in any dog but it is more common in small dogs. There is a supplement called glandex which many pets respond well to. You may also try feeding him a higher fiber diet. Lastly, sometimes frequent anal gland issues can be a sign of allergies. You may talk with your veterinarian about ways to diagnose an allergy and if this seems to be indicated. Surgery is also an option to remove the anal glands. I'm sorry to hear that Miggy expressed his anal glands on your bed. How unpleasant! Some dogs will express their anal glands during times of stress or even during extreme relaxation. This occurs more commonly if the material in the glands is more liquid rather than being more paste-like. Infected anal glands do not typically express easily. Try to look at Miggy's hind end and determine if you see a red or open lesion just outside of his anus, as this would indicate an anal sac rupture from an abscess or impaction. If this is the case, Miggy needs veterinary attention. Otherwise, continue closely monitoring Miggy for hind end licking or scooting to determine if his anal glands are full. If he continues not to show any signs that they are full, try taking him to his vet every month or so to have them expressed to prevent future problems.

This is not unusual when dogs get very excited. You can wash his bottom with soap and rinse well. Make sure to get the underside of his tail. There is a product called Glandex that many dogs respond well to. I it helps to express the glands when he has a bowel movement. It is a supplement that you feed them and you can find pretty easily.
