Should I worry about strong reactions to the Eurican vaccine in dogs?

Your dog should get an antihistamine before the vaccination. You should ask your vet about giving him a diphenhydramine , or chlorpheniramine injection about an hour before getting the vaccination. This should avoid the reaction or at least reduce the impact. Your veterinarian should have these injectables available.

For small dogs, I generally do recommend to separate vaccines by a few weeks. This will decrease the chances of a vaccine reaction. You can also give the pups diphenhydramine prior to the vaccines to further decrease reaction rates. Definitely discuss these options with your veterinarian. Possible side effects of vaccines are vomiting, diarrhea, facial swelling, lethargy and collapse. If your pups exhibit any of these afterwards, be sure to have them seen immediately. The vast majority of pets are fine with vaccines however and reactions are rare. Most vets vaccinate based up risks associated with life style and the diseases found in your area. I recommend to have a conversation about risk factors for your pups but I suspect they are present if your vet is recommending these vaccines. Clear communication however is always best. These can include trouble breathing and swelling of the face/mouth. However, most pets do not experience these side effects. Some pets do have a little bit of pain at the injection site and feel a little tired, not much different from humans after they get vaccines.

That could be a vaccine reaction. You did not say however which type of medication you gave him for the fever and so I cannot advise if there are side effects to that or not. Please repost with the name of the medication and the active ingredient if needed. I also recommend to call his veterinarian and tell him what’s going on. Vaccines are generally well tolerated by dogs and vaccine reaction rates are very low. If he has had the vaccine before without any issue, then it is unlikely that he will have a problem this time around (but it is not impossible). Definitely titer testing will tell you if the vaccine is needed and is a good idea if vaccine reactions have occurred in the past or if it makes you uncomfortable. In the US, most adult dogs will get the DHPP vaccine every 3 years once they finish the puppy series. Lasltly, some dogs will get an injection of diphenhydramine 15 minutes prior to a vaccine to decrease the potential for a reaction. Vaccine reactions include vomiting, diarrhea, facial swelling, hives, collapse (anaphylactic reaction) and can triggger autoimmune conditions. The vast majority of vaccine reactions are the less serious form. If you pet has a history of any autoimmune condition, you should discuss if vaccinations are appropriate for him. Well, happy early birthday to Toby. Vaccines are something that we give everyday and rarely have side effects, but side effects are certainly a possibility. The most common side effects are a mild fever, mild lethargy and discomfort at the injection site. These are the result of the vaccine stimulating the immune system and typically resolve with a day or two. More severe vaccine reactions can be analphylactic reactions and typically occur very quickly after a vaccine is given (within minutes) and may include hives, facial swelling and trouble breathing. Toby is likely already outside this time frame, so you likely do not need to worry about an anaphylactic reaction. Such a reaction to vaccinations are not completely uncommon, these usually resolve without treatment within 24 hours. if it has been more than 24 hours and she is still not herself i would advise you to contact your vet, sometimes pain killers are needed. in some more rare cases vaccination reaction can cause more long lasting issues, but this is extremely rare.
