My dog has a stomach infection. Can he eat bananas during recovery?

There is not a hard and fast rule for how long a pet should be without food. Some vets say as long as 24 hours. I generally recommend 6 to 12 hours. It may help also if you feed him a bland diet for the next 24 hours. Boiled white meat chicken and plain boiled white rice. If he continues to be sick, have him examined by the veterinarian.

If your dog is recovering from parvo you should not be offering any foods other than his regular diet or bland meals of boiled rice and chicken as the other foods may cause the already irritated intestinal lining to become worse or prolong the irritation. If he is not eating his food there may still be some underlying pain or GI upset. You can offer a bland meal of boiled rice and chicken for a day or so, however if the lack of appetite continues or he does not begin to eat his food it is best to seek veterinary care.

I am sorry to hear about your concern for Baburoa. Bananas are not toxic so he just may experience some gastrointestinal upset such as diarrhea or constipation, and in rare cases vomiting. Many dogs will not experience any of these symptoms and will show no change, it just depends on how sensitive your dog's stomach is.

Some dogs obtain a food aversion to something they were eating when they were sick. I suggest you start feeding him a bland diet to see if that helps to entice him to eat: * boiled chicken * scrambled eggs * plain pasta * plain rice * human baby foods (meat flavor) No butter, oil or spices on the food. If he eats this well then after a few days you can start to slowly mix in dog food but I suggest you try a different brand. If he still won't eat then I would be worried that something more serious may be going on. Were any x-rays done? Is he losing weight? Any drooling? Vomiting?

Poor Hugo! He could have an infection, parasite, upset stomach from something he ate, pancreatitis, liver disease, kidney disease, endocrine disease, etc. Since he isn't eating or drinking much he could become dehydrated so he really should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. Your vet can run blood-work and take an x-ray, if needed, to help diagnose and then prescribe medications to treat. He might need fluids, an anti-nausea medication, antibiotic, and/or gastrointestinal protectant. Hope he feels better soon!

It is highly digestible palatable diet that easy on the gastrointestinal tract. You can also add Fortiflora as a probiotic.
