My dog has dry, split fur by her collar. What can I do to treat it?

It is possible that the allergies and the collar are acting in combination to cause the hair loss. Other reasons are also possible. You may try switching her diet to the brand Royal Canin or Nutro as both of these are aimed at skin health. Starting her on an additional omega-3 fatty acid supplement may also be beneficial. You can try the Duoxo shampoo's (calming shampoo or seborrhea shampoo depending on what is present) and the Essential 6 spot on treatment. Also daily fish oils (pet formulated from your local pet store) is a natural skin anti-inflammatory. If these don't work after several weeks of use, then it is best to get Miley evaluated by your vet to make sure there are no underlying conditions (Cushings disease, hepatic disease, Thyroid disease, etc) contributing to the skin problems.

It's hard to know exactly why she has the brownish discoloration. certainly you should try switching her to a different flea product and remove the collar. It may take up to two months for any discoloration to disappear. You could then try switching the collar to a nylon or fabric collar, again, it may take up to two months. It could be inhaled like pollens & dust, or contact to grass, cleaners in the house or products used outdoors on the lawn. Since her skin looks dry & scaly, then you want to use a moisturizing, oatmeal based shampoo, something like Dermal Soothe shampoo that is available on Amazon. I also recommend starting Fifi on a good omega 3 fatty acid. Nordic Naturals fish oil for dogs, also available on Amazon is an excellent choice. Judging from the pictures and your description, I suspect that D'Kota may have a skin infection or skin allergy. I would recommend the following products, which can all be found online quite easily: 1. Welactin omega 3 fish oil 2. Douxo PS Chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolved. 3. Malacetic conditioning spray and apply twice daily to affected areas until resolved 4. Essential 6 spot on by Dermoscent If there is no improvement or the infection worsens, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate treatment recommendations can be made. You can wipe the area with skin sensitive baby wipes 2-3 times daily. What you're describing does look like dry skin. though some breeds can have naturally coarse/dry skin and fur as well. However, with any skin condition, a complete workup with your vet first is a good idea. They can help rule out any health issues, nutritional problems or skin issues (bacteria, fungus, yeast, etc) that need to be addressed. Making sure to feed a balanced diet or even a sensitive skin food may help in addition to supplements such as fish oils or vitamin E. Not bathing too often and using an aloe/oatmeal shampoo can also help keep the coat frying overdrying and getting flaky.
