My dog has a dry scab on his neck. Is it normal or concerning?

This looks like a scab. He could have gotten this after a little bug bite, a local skin infection, a minor injury from being in the yard, or something else. Since it is so small, I would not be too concerned right now. If it isn't healing, you see discharge, you find more spots, or this spot gets larger, I would have your vet take a look at it to see if he needs any oral meds or other treatment to help it heal. This could be from trauma, an insect bite (like a tick) or the start of a skin infection. Unfortunately there is no way to tell for sure. I wouldn't be overly worried at this stage. Personally, if Buffy were my dog, I would just leave it alone and monitor it. But, if you want to do something at home, you can apply a thin layer of an antibiotic ointment over it twice a day. If it doesn't heal or it looks worse at any stage then get him to your vet for an exam. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! it seems like Nyla has a small scab along her incision though it appears to be healing very well. I recommend that you avoid picking the scab as she will likely bleed if you do that and form another scab. This scab will likely fall off on its own once the entire incision, including the scab, is completely healed. I think she will be fine. Good luck!

Anytime there is an injury to the skin, a scab should form and should stay in place until the skin underneath is completely healed. If the area of Tula's scab was deep, it can take a while for the skin underneath to completely heal enough for the scab to fall off. If the area around the scab is red or oozing or the scabbed area is enlarging, then I would recommend having Tula examined by your veterinarian. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It still looks mostly healed so I think it would be fine to monitor for now. If another scab forms then I would make sure to not her scratch it off. You can try to keep her from it by using dog "shorts" you may find online to try to cover that area. Hopefully, this continues to heal without problems. If it becomes a recurrent issue or it develops a discharge with a foul odor concerning for an infection, have her evaluated by a veterinarian then. If it’s on his neck it could be from his collar or something that rubs on that area. If it is just those 2 spots and there is no discharge from the area and Titan isn’t bothering them, I would leave the areas alone and let them continue to heal. I would keep his collar off for a few days to decrease more irritation. If the areas have discharge, or are getting bigger, I would take him to the vet. Good luck and kisses to Titan!

Hello. If things are pretty static it is best just to leave the scab alone. Chances are at some point it will fall off. Most likely another scab will form & the process will repeat itself.
