Why did my dog die from a cold/virus even after vet treatment?

First off, I'm so sorry you recently lost Meg! How horrible for you, please accept my condolences for your loss. Old age isn't a disease, and based on your description of her symptoms, I would say something was definitely wrong that could have ended her life even with treatment. From the picture, it appears she could have petechiae, which are small, pinpoint spots on the skin and mucus membranes. That can be caused by rat poison (something toxic), trauma, heat stroke, infectious diseases, DIC, or bone marrow cancers to name some of them. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain, but you could request a necropsy (an autopsy for pets) is done to determine the cause of her again. I am so sorry for your loss. It is never easy to lose someone in the family. It is doubtful that this started strictly due to the hot weather. Some dogs who develop upper respiratory infections when the seasons change can sometimes develop pneumonia secondary to that. Pneumonias can also be contracted from viral infection, fungal infections, by aspirating something, bacteria, cancer, and much more. Unfortunately, without knowing the whole history it is difficult to say exactly what started or caused the pneumonia. Unfortunately, sometimes you can never figure out the cause of it. I’m sorry to hear that your pups are sick! Most upper respiratory infections from the shelter are viral, but young newly adopted dogs are at greater risk for secondary bacterial infections Which is why they often get put on antibiotics. However, many otherwise healthy adult dogs will recover quickly without any antibiotics. I Ted to treat it like you would a cold in yourself. Fluids, Rest, and a little time as long as appetite is normal and acting fine otherwise . Hello. I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved pet. He, unfortunately, suffered a severe cardio-pulmonary event, either from the presence of heartworms, cancer, or severe cardiomyopathy. He was probably sicker than you realized, & also sicker longer than just the past 6 weeks. We all try to do the best we can for ourselves & our pets & sometimes we just run out of time to do anything. I know you feel bad, but you have to be honest with yourself & know that even if you had the money, he may have been too sick to do much for him. Poor Luna! When pets have severe viral infections, they need supportive care. This may include intravenous fluids and feeding through a nasogastric tube. It sounds like Luna is very sick. I recommend to call her veterinarian and discuss parental feeding and fluids. She may also need additional supportive care. I hope this helps and I hope she starts recovering quickly.

First off, I'm extremely sorry you lost three puppies. That is terrible and please accept my condolences for your loss. It is extremely rare that a puppy or dog could catch the flu from a human (not a silly question!), so it's unlikely that is the cause. Unfortunately puppies are quite fragile, and there are some that do not make it. You sound like you have been very lucky to have never lost puppies like this before! It truly can happen, and there is nothing you could have done to prevent it. Nine is a big litter too, and these puppies may have just been more fragile than the others, or weren't getting enough milk. Again, I'm sorry.

Please keep in mind I can't say for certain what caused her to pass away, but I can offer some guess. It is possible that she had cancer. It's common in senior dogs, and it can be festering for a while before the dog sudden becomes ill. They can't tell us when they are sick and are pretty stoic with pain, so oftentimes when we notice something is wrong, it's very late in the disease. That happened with my own dog last year. He seemed perfectly normal, and then one night he appeared to crashed. I rushed him into the clinic for treatment, and he had an abdomen full of fluid likely from a ruptured splenic tumor. He had shown no other signs of illness before then, and unfortunately I had to let him go, so I completely understand how hard it is to suddenly lose a beloved pet and feel devastated. Her death could have also been caused by liver disease, pancreatitis, or a number of other illnesses. I wish I could say for certain to give you some answers, but I can only offer my guesses and my sincerest condolences for your loss :-(
