My dog had diarrhea, now liquid dripping from her butt. Is she okay?

It definitely seems like an infection was the initial cause of the diarrhea and was well-controlled with the metronidazole. Anytime we treat for infection, we change the environment of the gut flora and it's not unusual for it to take some time for things to get back to normal after the antibiotics have been discontinued. It's also possible for the infection to return if not treated for long enough, or if the most appropriate antibiotic was not used. An increase in mucous tells me that there are issues within the colon where most fermentation by normal gut bacteria takes place. If the stools are still somewhat normal appearing (besides the excess mucous) and Giardia has been ruled-out as a cause, then I would wait a few days to see if things return to normal. You may consider adding probiotics to their diet if also advised by your veterinarian. I hope this helps and Bella and Pepper get better soon.

If you are seeing continuing blood, this likely means Togi is not completely normal yet. Dogs should not have blood in their stool. Togi should be examined by the veterinarian. Ask about parasite testing (both worms and protozoal). I'm not sure what medication he had but pets are often given and antibiotic and a probiotic as well as a bland diet if bacteria is suspected. Sometimes a special diet is used (a hydrolyzed protein) if a food allergy is suspected but typically food allergy does not cause bleeding in the gut. Lastly, your veterinarian may want to have an x-ray to look for a foreign object in the intestines. I hope this helps and that they figure out the cause quickly.

Hi! I would say that it is likely ok. Sometimes it takes a bit longer to see results. If it is just soft and Snowball is otherwise fine, I would just give it a few days before getting concerned. Keep in mind that metronidazole is not always a curative medication for diarrhea but rather an antibiotic with anti-inflammatory properties that help with colitis. This means that it will not treat an underlying disease every time. Perhaps try a few days on a bland diet mostly composed of boiled chicken or turkey and rice. If no resolution within a few days, it may be appropriate to start her on a probiotic or try a different medication such as Tylosin. Best of luck with her!

Blood in the stool, even if it seems to "go away" and come back later, is never normal. The fact that it's accompanied by diarrhea suggests colitis, or inflammation of the colon, as opposed to some type of bleeding mass in the rectum or colon. Colitis can have a number of causes, including dietary indiscretion (eating something rotten or non-food), parasites, food allergies/food sensitivities, inflammatory bowel disease, or infection. Leah may improve with a diet change, perhaps a more digestible diet specifically for gastrointestinal problems. To assume it's a "tummy issue" could be to ignore causes that are treatable, and at this point she's not only having diarrhea but she also lost her appetite. It's been three days and she's not improving, so I recommend having her seen by her vet for labwork to include parasite testing, blood work, and urinalysis for starters. If all is normal consider a bland diet (as recommended above), and a probiotic supplement. Ultimately, she may need to have biopsies taken to diagnose the exact cause.

Hello. A cat cannot be constipated & have diarrhea at the same time. I think you are seeing Tiki strain, but this is from abdominal discomfort probably due to spasms in the gut, not from being constipated. There are all sorts of reasons for the diarrhea with blood, a bacterial infection, intestinal parasites, food intolerance, & less likely because of her age - neoplasia. The first thing to do is eliminate all fish from her diet. Go with a meat or poultry based diet. This can either be a dry kibble or wet food. Start her on a probiotic designed for cats. We have Proviable by Nutrimax & FortiFlora by Purina here. Next, have a sample of her stool examined by a veterinarian for the presence of intestinal parasites & then wormed with the proper medication. If Lexi is still playful and eating, and her stools are improving (even if they're not normal yet), then it sounds like you're on the right track. I would continue with her course of flagyl as your vet prescribed. If her stools don't continue to get firmer, you might want to ask your vet about adding a probiotic, or even consider the Hills Biome prescription food, which has been shown to be very effective for diarrhea issues. If the diarrhea worsens again, reach back out to your vet. We often start by treating diarrhea fairly symptomatically and supportively, but there are many other potential causes of diarrhea including Addisons disease, intestinal parasites, inflammatory bowel, food sensitivities, etc - so depending on the diagnostics your vet ran on Lexi initially, they may recommend further workup if this issue becomes recurrent. Causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, medications, food allergy/intolerance, new treat/food/table scraps. The straining is due to inflammation and that he feels like he has to defecate but there is little to no stool left. The scooting can be from anal irritation, stool stuck to his anus (check and clean) or his anal glands are full If the diarrhea is bad, then I recommend fasting him for 12-24 hours to rest his GIT and to stop adding "fuel to the fire." Then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. If the diarrhea continues, he stops eating or starts vomiting he should see your Vet. I hope this helps and I wish Takoda a speedy recovery!
