Why is my dog's urine dark yellow after vaccines and dewormer?

Typically dark colored urine is an indicator of blood, which is often seen in pets with a urinary tract infection. It is very unusual to have this occur in a puppy so young. If puppy is eating and healthy otherwise I would monitor him to see if this dark urine is repetitive. If you see it again and again, then it is best to take pup to your vet for a quick check of the urine to confirm and further treatment (i.e. antibiotics, etc).

This is not likely to be related to the vaccine, it could potentially be related to the heartworm medicine but it is more likely to be as a result of something he ingested. Keep an eye on his appetite and stools in the next 48 hours, if it is getting worse- take him to the vet to get treated.

One of the most common reasons that urine becomes darker is if a puppy is dehydrated. If Loki is not drinking normally, that may be a concern. Food change should not cause a change in the color of the urine unless you changed from a wet food to a dry food and they are not drinking enough water to compensate for that change. Other reasons for urine color to become darker include problems with red blood cells or muscle cells. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I agree, that is some very dark urine which indicates he must not be drinking enough. You need to increase his water intake. The best way to do that is to add some chicken or beef broth to his food; use the low sodium kind. The added salt (even in the low sodium variety) should encourage him to drink more. If this dark urine continues for more than a few days you should take him to your vet for an exam and urine test.

Take a stool sample in to your vet to be examined. If he is acting normally, playful, eating, has good energy, etc, I don't think you need to be too concerned, but do take him in and bring a stool sample with you. Your vet may recommend deworming him if it hasn't been done within the last 2 weeks. I doubt its related to his vaccines. Vaccine reactions typically occur within hours of the vaccine being given, and it sounds like there was enough of a delay that its not likely the cause. In terms of you "felt something," when your hand was on his stomach, I suspect you were feeling gas moving through the GI tract, which is normal. Poor Rocky! No, urinating blood is not a normal side effect of vaccinations, so I would definitely recommend taking him back to the vet to have this checked. The vet can do a urinalysis to help determine the problem (possibly a UTI) and get him started on appropriate medication to treat it if needed.

These signs might be compatible with a urinary tract infection/inflammation. Stress related (idiopathic type of inflammation), infection and presence of crystals are the most common causes of it.
