My dog is coughing, has thick mucus, and breathing hard. Is she okay?

Molly is such a cutie! It could be that she picked up a respiratory infection or kennel cough when she was boarded. I would have her seen by a vet for this, but there's no need to rush her into a vet asap as long as she is eating and drinking normally, isn't extremely lethargic, and isn't having difficulty breathing. I can give you something to try at home to see if that helps with her breathing, but have her seen by a vet in the morning. You can try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections.

It sounds like Moka may be congested, and it could be she has a problem like a respiratory infection or heart disease causing this breathing issue. Sometimes they are able to cough up the mucus and other times it is slowly absorbed by the body. Since she’s having trouble breathing I recommend to call and update your veterinarian. I'm concerned about your dog, especially since her symptoms are getting worse. She could have a respiratory infection, or it could be something more serious such as heart disease. I think she needs to see a vet now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. I think it's a good idea to get Precious checked out again if the coughing is returning. Sometimes it's an infection and other times it persistent inflammation. The doctor may recommend a medication to break up mucus and/or decrease inflammation. Until you get her into the vet, make her drinking water tepid and avoid excessive activity that will cause her to bark a lot of pant. I am concerned that she is having such trouble breathing. This could be another pneumonia, an upper respiratory infection, a fungal infection, a congenital heart problem and much more. If your vet has already done X-rays and they were normal, you may want to talk to them about having an ultrasound of the heart done. Also, I would have her blood work checked to see how her liver and kidney values are and see what her white blood count looks like. Finally, I would talk to your vet about whether see needs some antibiotics and medicine to help her breathing. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon.

It sounds like Zoey may have an upper respiratory infection such as kennel cough. This is a very contagious disease and she may have picked it up while walking outside, or when sniffing another dog. This is usually a self-limiting disease and will go away by itself within 4 weeks. If she gets a purulent discharge (nose and/or eyes), has trouble breathing or coughs more than a couple of times a day, you need to take her to the vet for an exam, antibiotics and cough medicine.
