My dog is coughing and gagging while on medication. Should I worry?

Oh no, poor Little Girl! She could be coughing from a respiratory infection, but unfortunately there aren't any medications you can give her OTC. I would have her seen by a vet tomorrow. The vet can diagnose if she is suffering from a respiratory infection and can prescribe medication to treat it. Tonight, if she's congested, you can try using a humidifier or bringing her into the bathroom with the door closed while you take a hot shower - the steam and humidity help to break up congestion and temporarily relieve symptoms associated with respiratory infections.

Yes, this can be normal. Sometimes a longer course of antibiotics is needed to treat a respiratory infection. Keep in touch with Nugget's vet to update them on her progress, and get her into the vet immediately if she stops eating, the cough gets worse, or she becomes very lethargic. Best of luck.

Since it's resolving on it's own without treatment, I'd recommend just continuing to monitor things and take her to her vet if she starts to get worse again. She may have just had a mild cold or kennel cough, but it sounds like she's well on the mend.

I am concerned that she is having such trouble breathing. This could be another pneumonia, an upper respiratory infection, a fungal infection, a congenital heart problem and much more. If your vet has already done X-rays and they were normal, you may want to talk to them about having an ultrasound of the heart done. Also, I would have her blood work checked to see how her liver and kidney values are and see what her white blood count looks like. Finally, I would talk to your vet about whether see needs some antibiotics and medicine to help her breathing. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon.

However, other conditions unrelated to possible aspiration such as heart disease, infectious pneumonia, or heart worm infection can cause coughing as well and may just be a coincidence. If you are concerned about Chester’s cough, I recommend having him seen by his vet to rule out the conditions above. If Panda had something stuck in his throat, he wouldn't be eating because any object there would prevent him from swallowing. It could be that his allergies are causing him to cough, or he could be getting a respiratory infection. Keep an eye on him for the next couple of days, and if the cough continues, take him into the vet. Rest him to see if that helps with it.
