My Pom has been diagnosed with a collapsed trachea. The vet says he need to lose 4lbs. He`s 17 lbs now and needs to weigh 13 lbs. He`s 7 years old, neutered and has a low activity level. How many calories a day should he be consuming to have a safe healthy weight loss.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! poor Chewie!

I would first eliminate all to most of his treats. No people food. Raw hides have a ton of calories in them. I would do about 383 Kcal per day. That is 20% reduction of the RER calculation for a 13 lb dog. 383 should be his TOTAL intake for all food (table food, treats, dog food) per day. If there is no weight loss in 1 month I would reduce it again by another 20%.

I hope this helps and I wish you and Chewie the best!
