My dog has a collapsed trachea. Can she wear a cone after spaying?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I do not think those pillow ones on the neck work very well. But the soft-sided cones you can certainly use. The hard plastic ones are not really recommended. Dogs don’t resist the soft ones as much as the hard ones. Just make sure that the cone is long enough to go past the end of her nose or she wilI still be able to lick at the incision. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Without seeing how deep the cu is or whether it is located on her neck, I have some difficulty in advising you about the cone. I would recommend reaching out to your regular veterinarian for further advice or taking a peek at her cut to see if it is a concern. In order to protect her spay site, you can also buy post-surgical dog "onesies" that would mean she wouldn't need a cone collar but she wouldn't be able to get at her stitches as well. Good luck!

Hi ! With my dog I used a medical pet vest, that it’s fabric, can be washed and it is well tolerated.There is a XXXs size for Chihuahuas. The alternative is to have your vet put the buster collar on Kobe, you could give the collar a last try once fitted properly. Hope this helps !

The cone should stay on unless Jazmin has trouble eating or drinking. If this happens, it can be removed for mealtimes but should be replaced immediately afterwards. If you see her having trouble on the stairs, carry her up or gently raise her head to clear the steps. She will acclimate to the collar in a day or two.

I am sorry we weren't able to get to your question sooner. Its possible that the cone is too tight. She may have bit her tongue or lip leading to the bleeding, though. Loosen the cone to the point that you can comfortably but snugly get 2 fingers between the cone and the skin of the neck. if she has had any continued coughing, or if she seems to be struggling at all to breathe, please don't delay, get her to the vet immediately. Most veterinarians will provide you with detailed discharge instructions upon return of your pet. With these instructions will likely include the cone you've described. Confining Pharah to her crate for the night may not be a bad idea if she's receptive to it, but it is certainly not required. Keeping her somewhat calm is fine as long as she has no access to her surgical site. As far as the procedure, I would recommend having the ovaries and uterus removed if you are sterilizing versus only the ovaries. While the procedure will prevent a pregnancy, it will not prevent future diseases like infections and tumors of the uterus. Dogs that are most predisposed to these conditions are middle to older age females that have not been bred previously. Hope this answers your question.

Poor Lola! Her incision looks great. Could she be tremoring from the anxiety of wearing the cone? You could take it off of her and watch her closely to see if it improves. If so, you could consider putting an inflatable collar on her that will still prevent her from licking but causes a little less anxiety. Some other causes of head tremors could be pain, ear problems, muscle spasms, next pain, or even electrolyte abnormalities. If changing her e-collar doesn't help, I would have your vet take a look at her. I would try to get the episode on video as it may help your vet with diagnosis. I hope this helps!
